Editorial Reviews

Netherlands released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), Dutch ( Subtitles ), WIDESCREEN, SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Scene Access, Trailer(s), SYNOPSIS: This action drama concerns political unrest and personal crises set against the battle for a free Ireland in Belfast in 1983. Gingy McAnally (Anthony Brophy) is a member of the Irish Republican Army who, after serving a stretch in prison, is once again called upon by the IRA to work with them. While McAnally is not certain if he wants to get involved with "the troubles" again, he grudgingly agrees after the safety of his wife and children is threatened by IRA henchmen. However, McAnally is soon busted by Lt. David Ferris (Cary Elwes), a British army officer, and is ruthlessly interrogated by Chief Inspector Rennie (Timothy Dalton), one of the leaders of the Belfast Police who is determined to put the rebels out of business. Rennie convinces McAnally that his only hope is to admit to everything he knows about the IRA and its members; McAnally sheepishly goes along with Rennie's demands, and in time, he strikes up a friendship with Ferris. However, McAnally discovers that betraying the IRA has put his life in grave danger; just as significantly, his wife and family are no longer sure that they can trust him after he turns in his comrades.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping exploration of human nature, August 20, 2004
By
This review is from: The Informant [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a must-see movie for anyone interested in Ireland, human nature under stress, the IRA, police work, urban guerilla warfare, superb acting, great direction, or simply a wonderfully compelling story. How and why someone would turn informer, how others would relate to him and vice versa -- the way this movie presents these and other issues is superbly well done and the acting is absolutely convincing. Having read the other reviews, I was prepared to find the Dalton character (lead RUC inspector) much more brutal and simplistic than he was. Mind, he's no peach, but Dalton carries conviction, as do all the other actors, including the poor hapless Brit soldier caught up in the middle. Can't recommend this highly enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Informant, September 17, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Informant [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is slightly better than 'Framed' and in my opinion one of Tim's better choices! Very well written and directed and for that matter acted by all those on screen! Tim Dalton gives an excellent performance, his best since Licence to Kill in my mind! I won't give the plot away but I will say you would be foolish not to buy this! A gritty if somewhat harrowing tale of life in Northern Ireland.

5.0 out of 5 stars A film about the Irish and it is Great!, February 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Informant [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I saw this film because I am a huge fan of Cary Elwes and because I am Irish. It is about a man(I don't remember the character's name) played by Cary Elwes who is English and how he sympathizes with the Irish and the IRA. It is powerful and a great film. I am glad to see Cary Elwes getting back to more dramatic roles. Even if you aren't interested in the IRA or Cary Elwes this is still a must see film.
