My son was complaining that words were moving around on the page. Many of my friends mentioned Irlen's syndrome and encouraged me take him in for the testing. The test by an Irlen's certified screener in my area is $440. So to check this myself I ordered this kit and made a chart of all of the single color and double color combinations. Printing off two font sizes (12 and 8 pt) with a paragraph of text, we were able to determine his optimal color out of 55 combinations. It took a coupe of days because certain colors amplify the movement. Once we got his colors we checked a couple of alternatives to Irlens, and after 3 optomotrists, an othamologist, a psychologist (who claimed knew Irlens testing) we ended with a visual therapist who prescribed special glasses that stopped the movement for my son. He went from 56 words per minute to 99 in about 2 months after the glasses, so we didn't persue Irlens's lenses.

In the Irlens's book, they recommend checking with optomotrists and visual therapists prior to getting Irlen's lenses to make sure there isn't an underlying issue.

Irlen Overlays provide the best glare reduction to increase reading fluency, accuracy and comfort. I have seen children and adults with dyslexia and attention deficits read with increased attention, fluency, accuracy and ease in just a few minutes after years of other interventions. Getting the right color takes training but just trying out different colors to find the most comfortable is better then the glare of the white page and black letter. Highly recommended . I have used them in my therapy and special ed practice for over 10 years with great success!!!

There is no reason to expect these overlays to be useful in the average person, nor even in everyone with reading problems. There is more than one type of dyslexia. I developed severe reading difficulties at the age of 18 after getting Lyme disease, though it was not diagnosed properly for many years. I had a hard time in college and medical school as I could only read in a dark room with a dim light over what I was reading. It seemed like the letters were moving.

I saw a TV program about Irlen lenses on 20/20 about 30 yrs ago now, and called the TV station and asked where I could go to get evaluated. I couldn't believe the difference with a yellow-orange color.

Not everyone who evaluates children with dyslexia knows about this, even now, which I think is tragic. After many years of great success in academics, I felt humiliated and stupid when I developed reading difficulties and I have often thought about how children without this history of success feel when they first encounter dyslexia when trying to learn to read.

I recommend trying this concept for children with reading difficulties, especially those who complain of the pages being too bright, those who lose track of the next line, those who complain of letters moving, and those who try and cover up the letter above and below in order to read a line.

Once the color has been identified that is the most helpful, glasses can be obtained that are tinted with this color. This should also help depth perception and possibly make a difference in some sports that require good visual skills, such as tennis, etc.

This can be a life-changing intervention.

I find the quality to be excellent. The only problem is that I don't see any information about getting extra transparencies, just the sample pack.

I've used Irlen Overlays for over twenty years with genuine success. They're reliable. They work. They're the gold standard of colored overlays.

Imitation may be a form of flattery, but in the case of overlays, the Irlen overlays are the only ones that should be used. Developed by psychologist Helen Irlen, the overlays are diagnosed through a structured assessment that assures that the proper color or color combinations are prescribed. Contact irlen.com for accurate information about using overlay color filters. Spectral modification in the form of overlays and Irlen spectral filter lenses are treatments for a visual perceptual sensory overload caused by light sensitivity and need professional assessment.

This was life changing for my 8 year old son who suffers from Dyslexia and Dysgraphia. After exhausting levels of research and thorough testing my son was still struggling. I ordered these and we tried each color. The minute I put the Turquoise colored plastic sheet over a paper with writing my son said these words to me "Everything is straight!!!" It turns out he never knew that what he was seeing was incorrect. The problem lies within white paper and black lettering most of the time. When a backround is of a different color a person/child will more often be able to see it correctly but not when it is on white/cream or possibly grey based paper. Each color will be individual and the eye of those effected will clearly let you know which color is right for them...

Go to irleninstitute.gostorego.com for individual overlays. You can choose your color and quantity. $4.00 each plus S&H! My 7 year old daughter has made great improvement since using the gray overlay. Thanks to her wonderful teachers for figuring out a solution!
