5.0 out of 5 stars Parody- Raised to an Art Form, July 23, 2004
This review is from: Iron Joe Bob (Paperback)
If 'Iron John' was the iconic journey into the masculine, 'Iron Joe Bob' is the journey to the base of the masculine tailbone. Not only is Briggs' parody genuinely funny(whether or not you have read, 'Iron John'), but he does match the original author's work, image for image and metaphor for metaphor. The difference is that rather than working with deep and brooding images, Briggs makes his point(enjoy the pun) using deep and...uh...erect images.

If you took 'Iron John' very seriously, please do put a bit of space between that read and this one. You need to retreat briefly from the woods in order to recapture your sense of humor. No, we are not laughing at you, we're laughing with you. Once you can use your drum to set your beer on and start a fire with your corn-nut breath, you are ready to take on 'Iron Joe Bob.' Pick up your Wooly Spear and get to work.

The book is an entertaining and surprisingly literary read, rife with classic devices and characters that we have all met on our various journeys. Briggs uses them, familiar scenarios and skillful wit to hone his point again and again.

Enjoy the forest.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sexist, Misogynistic, Politically Incorrect, but Funny, July 19, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Iron Joe Bob (Paperback)
Joe Bob's homespun, down-home, "goldurn" brand of humor is potentially very offensive to all sorts of people (women, men, mothers, mothers-in-law, beauty contestants, fraternity boys, ex-presidents of the United States, and so forth), but I still found this book pretty enter- taining, and laughed out loud often enough. The guy is just so goofy I couldn't help myself. Of course, Joe Bob is fortysomething, but harks back to the days of college Spring Break, frat parties, and other drinking competitions, so I'm not sure he's the kind of guy you want to bring home to meet your parents, or even your brothers or sisters or best friend. Better just hang out with him in secret, have a few beers, and laugh until you cry!

5.0 out of 5 stars Slay Your Inner Weenie !, March 16, 2003
By
the wizard of uz (Studio City, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Iron Joe Bob (Paperback)
Our greatest living scholar researches a voluminous amount of technical and arcane texts-- Robert Graves's "The White Goddess", including the footnotes in Welsh, being a case in point---and concludes that our only hope to recover our Ancient Missing Spear and become authentic men, is to worship the One Great Breasted Earth Mother.

( Which in his fantasies, for reasons that he'd rather not dwell upon, is named Monique.)

Lovingly dedicated to "Bobby Bly" this book is the REAL story of "The Men's Movement" !

How thousands of milksops, sissies, jellyfish, doormats, Star Trek re-run addicts living in their parent's basements, 99lb weaklings and other assorted [people] have "Slayed Their Inner Weenies " by gettting in touch with their Missing Spear through yelling, drum beating, ripping their shirts off, and other toxic-freeing ceremonies at one of Joe Bob's legendary "I'M NOT A WIMP, GOLDANG IT!" weekends.

...Re-discovering Indigenous Manhood Initiatory Rituals (i.e; "Get a Job " Chapter 23) Joe Bob takes us on a mythically charged journey of self discovery through cosmic archetypes hitherto never explored.

Five stars are not enough.
