5.0 out of 5 stars Hey Ocean!'s U.S. debut is absolutely perfect. February 2, 2014
By Ari L.
Format:Audio CD
I have had this CD for about a year. My mom and I still enjoy every track; not much has changed!

I found out about this amazing group through the show "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic", as lots of "bronies" did. Lead vocalist and flutist Ashleigh Ball voices the peppy, athletic Rainbow Dash as well as the down-to-earth farmgirl Applejack. Both are excellent characters from an excellent show, but I definitely stayed for the chill, beautiful music.

If I Were A Ship: Excellent opener to Hey Ocean!'s fun sound. It begins with that group (and maybe a few fans!) shouting "HEY OCEAN!". Ashleigh Ball rocks an African thumb piano as she sings the fun lyrics, including my favorite one-liner - "Music is love in search of the words." Gyah, Ash, you're perfect. Also, the sounds of ocean waves in the background make me yearn for summer.

Make A New Dance Up: Probably my favorite song from the record. It's very fun. Wherever or even whenever I hear it, I've just gotta dance. This song has two great music videos, one of which is a throwback to old-school music video channels. The second is entirely made by the fans, who sent in their own dance videos, and is dedicated to "Super Ben", a young cancer patient who loves the song.

Big Blue Wave: Not my favorite, but still pretty good. Ashleigh delivers strong lead vocals in a generic pop song. No wonder it's their U.S. smash hit. The video features a crossdressing Vertesi.

Islands: David Beckingham takes the reins in belting out a "cuddle song", as the band calls this type of song. Whale noises and waves crashing on the shore make it very chill.

Jolene: David Vertesi (yes, this band has two guys named David!

If you were to add Canadian trio Hey Ocean!’s album IS (2012) to your Amazon shopping cart right now, it would let you know that customers who bought this album also bought My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, Season 1 on DVD. Which might seem incongruous until you realize that lead singer Ashleigh Ball provides the voice for MLPonies Rainbow Dash and Applejack. That Ball has a set of pipes on her should come as no surprise to any Pony fan[*] who’s heard her sing on “Find a Pet” or “Apples to the Core.” What may come as a surprise is that she, and her partners-in-crime David Beckingham and David Vertesi, are indie popsmiths of the highest order.

Is opens with an astonishing one-two-three punch. “If I Were a Ship” kicks things off with African kalimba and a gorgeous vocal melody and one of the finest one-liners I’ve ever heard: “Music is love in search of the words” – wowza. With its Latin-tinged, rapid-fire chorus, “Make a New Dance Up” picks up the tempo like an indie version of the Miami Sound Machine. And “Big Blue Wave” is pure, hooky guitar pop. It’s not complex stuff – “Our love is like a big blue wave,” “You make me wanna dance like no one ever has.” But it’s blissfully, irresistibly catchy, the kind of music that, in a better possible word, would be storming the charts right now.

It would be easy to simply put these three songs on endless repeat and forget that there’s a whole album after them. And IS is definitely a front-loaded effort: apart from the surging “I Am a Heart,” there’s nothing to match that magnificent opening trio. But there’s still plenty of goodies to be found on repeated listens, like the Amy Winehouse-esque “Change” or the coy, jazzy “Bicycle.

I admit -- I only bought this CD for one song -- You Make me Want to Make a New Dance Up (have you seen the video?), but ended up loving every song on it. Happy, good-mood music.

I really like this album, Big Blue Wave, Bicycle, and Jolene are awesome. Some songs I am not a huge fan of right now but they are growing on me. This is the first album I have heard from Hey Ocean, so I will be looking into others.

This is a really fantastic album. I bought it after seeing their you tube videos (some awesome acoustic performances of songs from this album), and I'm so glad I did. It's great driving music. Great cleaning the house music. Great hanging out music. Just great music.
