Editorial Reviews

Sealed 1974 original of the infamous all girl band, who just happened to be gay! This was one of those rare gems from the 70's that you didn't care who was making the music; you just knew they kicked ass. Small tears in shrink wrap on upper right and lower right corners.

First the housework. There is another band called Isis who are around now. This album is from the 1970s and I think these are two totally different bands. Think of looking up John Jones in the county phone book

This Isis is a funk soul jazz band who I found hearing a sample from an Andy Votel mix called Music To Watch Girls Cry. From Isis, he lifts a funkified version of the title track of Black Sabbath's first album.

Isis sound absolutely nothing like Black Sabbath, or for that matter many others. Here, the funk and soul balladry and jazz and screaming acid guitars are all sculpted together. This is really, really, daring, exciting, music, and the fact I am having so much trouble pinning this band's sound down only makes my case for how compelling Isis is. Think Funkidelic meets Ten Wheel Drive meets Hendrix Meets the Supremes.

The female singer has an extremely powerful voice, and is able to wrap around Isis's funky, rock soaked, soul baked musical curve balls. This is just one hell of an engaging album, which draws you in trying to figure it out, and then sounds amazing enough to keep you listening for a long, long time

ISIS was of their time, the mid-1970's, and ahead of their time as well. This 8 member all female band cooked up a diverse blend of rock, soul, funk, pop and jazz. Carol MacDonald was the leader/lead vocalist/rhythm guitarist, who had honed her craft for a solid decade with Goldie and The Gingerbreads in the 60's. With the drummer from that band, Ginger Bianco, she formed Isis in the early 70's, a rock band with a horn section. Keyboard player from the Gingerbreads, Margo Lewis, would join right after this album was recorded. The music on here is amazing. The sheer power of their music hits you right at the start with WAITING FOR THE SONRISE. It's music at full blast, with Carol's strong vocal matched by the horn section, with a guitar solo by lead guitarist Suzi Ghezzi. Comparisons to the other rock bands with horns - Chicago and Blood Sweat & Tears - don't do them justice at all. The music on this debut album is all over the map, but fits together as a cohesive, tight selection of songs and styles. The album has long songs with jams, beautiful ballads, funk, and a 30's style swing song, COCAINE ELAINE, that closes this most amazing album.

The cover of the album was a bold statement in 1974. The 8 members are pictured nude , painted in silver metallic paint. The sheer boldness of the cover perfectly suits the music inside. An all-female rock band playing music with talent, integrity and experience. Listening to this album, Isis had many textures to their music. The balance of the crunching rock and funk tunes to some gorgeously written and arranged ballads is equal, and illustrate that Isis could play everything. Carol's songs, EVERYBODY NEEDS A FOREVER, and RUBBER BOY, are heart-breakingly sung & played, with sumptuous melodies and arrangements. Either song could have been a hit single.

These girls were incredible singers and musicians. I used to see them play around Manhattan in the mid-1970's and could never understand why they never made it as they were incredible performers, playing songs ranging from R&B, to pop rock; I saw them many times in the local clubs. I have an old copy of this that's about worn out (but no longer own a turntable to play it on) so I think I'm going to buy a new copy and have it professionally copied to CD. Its a real shame they didn't catch on and I really wish this could be found on cassette tape or CD, but it never got that far. Somehow I suspect that today, given the Internet, YouTube, and MTV, they would have made it to the top. Even now, this is a hard to find OOP recording. I consider myself one of the lucky few to have heard them live, and in their prime!
