5.0 out of 5 stars For science fiction lovers
This was my favorite Walter Farley book, and I read them all. I did not know that I would like science fiction, but after I read the book, I was an sf fan. The idea that there could be colors I'd never seen before fed my imagination. To parents of girls: I didn't care that Walter Farley's protagonists were usually boys. The sense of dizzying joy when riding a horse is apparently universal!

5.0 out of 5 stars oNE OF THE BEST HORSE BOOKS EVA!, October 12, 2003
I dont care what anyone says, this was a great book. I mean, come on people, have an imagination! I liked how the "aliens" helped Steve, and they werent wanting to take his horse or something like other weird books. It was really good, it started out boring but got wayyyy better. A MUST for those who truly love horses.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spellbinding - imaginitive, April 11, 2001

I enjoyed reading this book, but it is not for those who don't have a good imagination. It isn't as down to earth as most of the other Black Stallion books, and like the Black Stallion's Ghost, I think Walter Farley was in a different state of mind when he wrote this book. I would recommend it for anyone 16+, mostly because anyone younger then that may have a hard time understanding it.

If you love The Black Stallion books by Walter Farley, you should take a look at his "Island Stallion" books. This title "The Island Stallion Races", is about Steve Duncan, with the aid of two humanoid aliens, racing Flame! Flame is a herd stallion, as wild as the come! Will Steve be able to control him on a track with other stallions? Can Flame prove his speed to the world? Also, who are these aliens? This book was an exciting and adventrous read for kids and adults alike! Hard to find, but worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book!, April 9, 2011
By
I actually haven't read this book since I was about twelve (I'm now 64, and I just ordered myself a copy for my own library), but I do remember that it absolutely THRILLED me when I first read it. I hadn't much cared for the first two Island Stallion Books (I'm a "Black" girl), but this one was special - unlike anything I'd ever read before. Jay and Flick (I never forgot their names) were such fascinating and "human" extra-terrestrials - especially Jay, and his fascination with horses (reminds one a little of Mr. Weasley and his delight in all things Muggle!). I also remember that the book left me with a lingering sense of a universe full of wonder and beauty and mystery. What's not to like?

1.0 out of 5 stars WORST OF THE SERIES, July 25, 2004
A Kid's Review
I am a HUGE black stallion fan, but this was a shame to the series and the author. aliens? come on, get real. And a little far fetched with the crazy man coming after them. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. You will be wasting your money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Weird, Interesting, and a Total Surprise, December 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I am currently buying and reading almost all of Walter Farley's books from his Black Stallion Series. As an English major in college I study different types of literature, and I noticed the gritty, realistic and modern techniques Farley uses in writing his books. The Island Stallion Races came as a complete and total surprise to me. As a person reads this book, they may wonder if they are reading something by the same author; it is totally different than Farley's other books. I wonder if maybe he watched a science fiction movie right before writing this one? Anyway, it is a good story, even if it is a little short, but seems totally out of the blue. If you are a Black Stallion and Island Stallion fan (I like Flame best, personally) go right ahead and read this book! Otherwise, if you are new to the series, start with the Black Stallion or the Island Stallion first.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not My Favorite, June 19, 2011
I remember reading this book and thinking it was strange. The mixture of the aliens with "real-life" fiction people didn't work for me. I think the author was stretching, looking for a way to get Flame off the island and into the world, and what he came up with just didn't work for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, September 27, 2001
A Kid's Review
This book was hard to get a hold of, but wasn't that bad. I've got to admit that it was a little unusual than the others in the series, but still not the worst. I mean it's about aliens who visit earth! How often is that used in a horse book? Definitely makes it one of a kind! It's pretty cool when Flame finally races. What could this mean? And does Flame win? What's this about aliens? Read this book to find out!
