Book Description

Images of America (Arcadia Publishing) June 23, 2008
Italians first settled in the Newark area in the 1880s. Italian Americans of Newark, Nutley, and Belleville shows these immigrants and their families from 1900 to the 1950s. The street peddler, the barber, the baker, the undertaker, the macaroni maker, the concert musician, and more are portrayed here in the grace and dignity of their work. Outings to the shore or Branch Brook Park balanced hard work and long hours. Family gatherings, weddings, first communions, and processions for the feasts of St. Gerard, St. Rocco, and St. Bartholomew were all a part of the life of the family and the vibrant Italian neighborhoods. More than 200 vintage photographs from family albums tell these stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brings to life and inspires reminiscences of a bygone time, August 5, 2008

This review is from: ITALIAN AMERICANS OF NEWARK, BELLEVILLE (Images of America (Arcadia Publishing)) (Paperback)
Dr. Sandra Lee as in all she undertakes has done a masterful job of bringing back the memories of another not too distant time. Her pictures are remarkable because they bring to life the sense of connection and life force that were part of the Italian American community in Newark, Nutley and Belleville. I have made this book my Christmas in July gift to many friends and they have then told me about their own recollections and stories. The conversation flows and once again the feeling of connection. Whatever your ethnicity, wherever your beginning roots, you will find pictures that will match pictures you may have from those times and inspire your own reminiscing with friends and family. Buy this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Caposele from another point of view, October 17, 2011

This review is from: ITALIAN AMERICANS OF NEWARK, BELLEVILLE (Images of America (Arcadia Publishing)) (Paperback)
I'm from Caposele (I was born there in 1974), and was really curious to learn how other people from my town lived the challenges that an emigration in another country gives. I appreciated the old photos from Caposele and nearby towns in Irpinia, in the South of Italy.

3.0 out of 5 stars ITALIAN AMERICANS OF NEWARK,BELLEVILLE,AND NUTLEY, March 5, 2009
This review is from: ITALIAN AMERICANS OF NEWARK, BELLEVILLE (Images of America (Arcadia Publishing)) (Paperback)
THE PICTURES AND BY-LINES ARE PRICELESS! MY ONE CRITICISM IS THAT THE SAME FAMILIES ARE SHOWN OVER AND OVER. THERE ARE MANY OTHERS WHO WISH THEY KNEW WHEN THIS DATA WAS BEING COLLECTED SO THEY TOO COULD HAVE BEEN A PART OF THE HISTORY OF THIS PICTORIAL.
