I bought this pack with the intention of using it to pass my ITIL v.3 foundation exam. When I first started reading through the book I found it rather poorly written and somewhat disjointed. It didn't seem to introduce the structure of ITIL well and so I found myself a bit lost as the what each section was really trying to achieve.

It was then that I discovered that the real value of the purchase is the associated online course which is really quite good. This made more sense of the material covered. The book is more like the notes that I would expect to take myself if the online course were a lecture. They are not comprehensive and clear but do provide a good memory jogger to the key points made during the online course.

On the whole I would say it is a reasonable package for the money. I purchased this book along with the "IT Service Management based on ITIL V3: A Pocket Guide (English Version) (ITSM Library)" and had no trouble passing the exam. The pocket guide gave a clear view of the structure of ITIL, the online course presented more information in an interesting way, and this book provided a memory jogger set of notes.

I found both the book and accompanying online course to be well written, well presented, accurate, and very digestible. I would recommend this package for anyone wanting to prepare for the ITIL V3 Foundations exam, and think that this is a better route than the multi-day day live training courses. I appreciated having more time to digest this info. BTW, I just took the exam and passed easily (96). I would, however, recommend anyone preparing for the exam to do a search for other sources of practice exams. This package only includes one practice test and I found that taking several was helpful.

Please be aware that ITIL v3 is being retired in favor of ITIL 2011 on 12/31/2011. As of 1/1/2012, you will not be able to take the ITIL v3 foundation exam. Thus, buying this book is a waste of your money. Otherwise, I'd give the book 3 stars on content and clarity, but 1 star on the terrible quality graphics (they look like poor quality bitmaps that were then printed and scanned at low resolution - bleah).

I found The Art of Service book/online training kit to be a very cost-effective way to learn ITIL v3 Foundation basics. With training dollars tight, my company strongly preferred this approach to a traditional class. I found the course easy to follow -- much more so than a book alone -- and passed the exam with high marks. I focused primarily on the online course but followed along in the book. I also took an online sample exam from another website to supplement the practice questions provided.

I was very pleased that as part of the online content, a free pdf download is available of the latest version of the text. My company inadvertently ordered an earlier version, which is easy to do since the numbering scheme is not consistent (white cover is 2008, "2009 Edition" is 2009, "Third Edition" is early 2010, and an even later version of the Third Edition is available online-only due to an ITIL syllabus change in May 2010). With the online text, I was able to easily ensure I was studying only from the appropriate edition.

Additional tips:
* Please note that earlier editions of the book are not as robust. I originally hesitated to order this course based on reviews describing the text as more a study guide than a book, but the version I studied from is now 256 pages and fully covered the material needed.

* Please note that in order to get a supporting certificate for project management ongoing credential maintenance (18 PDUs), you do need to take and pass the Foundation exam at an additional fee.

* Finally, note that the online component of this course is only available for three months unless you pay extra, so it is best to activate it only when you know you will have sufficient time available in that interval to complete it.

I recommend this course and plan to continue with The Art of Service's intermediate ITIL courses.

The ITIL v3 Foundation Complete Certification Kit has to be viewed as a kit. If you view it as a book and expect value, send me the money and figure out another way to certify. However, viewed as a kit book and e-class now you have a cohesive set of tools to study for and pass the ITIL Foundation Class exam. So you will think this is a copy of the other reviews, but it is areal review. Get the kit, sit down, take the e-class and take the practice exams at the e-learning site. Look the e-classes are broken down into bite size pieces, so they are easy to eat, only they talk very fast, so you take noes listen carefully, study the diagrams but you don't get it all in the first bite, they are talking fast. Take the test and you get a 7 or 8 out of 10, re-run the e-class, its only another 5 minutes, then retakke the test - now your scoring 9 or 10 out of 10.

Its simple, you can get 14 out of 40 questions wrong and still pass the test; and if you have been in IT for a few years, you could probably take the test and get 13 or 14 wrong and still get your certificate. But the ITIL Foundation isn't ALL about passing the test - ok it is - but it is also about learning the vocabulary, you acquire a vocabulary that you use to build your IT structures , processes and procedures and obfuscate your coworkers, so it IS WORTH learning. If for some mad reason, you continue to build to higher levels of ITIL certification, you also need the vocabulary, so take the e-classes ad the e-tests.

Now the book, the book has some nice chapters that do not follow the e-classes. Not to worry, your not reading the book that much - if at all.
