4.0 out of 5 stars Cypress Keeps It Real on IV

3.0 out of 5 stars NEEDS MORE REFINEMENT
Avid fan since "91" and always will be, but this album seemed to have been rushed. Colombia and Sony need to kick back on the deadlines. On the first, third, and a little on the second album the songs and production seem more real and personal. Almost every cut is bumpin on these albums. Its seems that Cypress always puts out a better album after a so-so...

The months flow by, seasons change, and rappers blow up---only to disappear seemingly overnight. Such is the nature of the hip hop industry...what is hot today is old news next week.

Cypress Hill are the exception to this trend. Back in 1991 they hit the scene in a big way with their first joint, containing the classics "How I Could Just Kill a Man" and "Hand On The Pump".

Their latest release, IV, does not disappoint. The tracks are a lot deeper, and the flow of B Real and Sen is tight. The song topics don't deviate too much; there is plenty of cop-hating, weed smoking, and automatic weapons. The thing is, Cypress knows how to come correct and make you play the cd til you know every word.

Some of the best songs on this album are "Tequila Sunrise", "Lightning Strikes", and "Dead Men Tell No Tales".

If you like Cypress even just a little bit, go get this ablum.

5.0 out of 5 stars good stuff!, April 24, 1999

For the longest time I thought that Black Sunday was the best rap album out there. Then I listened to this. I didn't think it was possible for Cypress Hill to beat Black Sunday, but they did it. I won't deny that this album has a few really stinky tracks (Freak Bi***, Steel Magnolias), but this is more than compensated for by the number of tracks that absolutely rock... I especially love Eye of the Pig, Window of My Room, Audio X, Prelude to a Come Up, and most of all LIGHTNING STRIKES! It's worth buying the cd just for Lightning Strikes. An EXCELLENT album, all in all.

5.0 out of 5 stars I give it five stars because there was no option for 6, September 12, 2005
This review is from: IV (Audio CD)
Try as I might, there was not one song on this album that I could honestly say was a dud. There were songs that I personally didn't like, as with all albums, but to name one song that was down right bad, nope. I say, this is my favorite Rap album of all time. Sadly, it cannot surpass Revolver by the Beatles of the best album of all time in my book. Now that you've completely lost faith in my review, just believe me and almost everyone else who wrote a review that this is a classic album that should have recieved more attention than it did.

5.0 out of 5 stars The last GREAT album by Cypress Hill, January 3, 2009
This review is from: IV (Audio CD)
I think AFTER this album Cypress Hill went "down hill", trying to capture the rock crowd with their following release. DJ Mugg's legendary dark grimy beats seem to disappear after this CD.

This album however, is very good!! The production is top notch and original. B-real and Sen do what they do, don't expect any songs about world peace or anything :)

Standout tracks: Checkmate, From the Window of My Room, Prelude To A Come Up (sick piano), Riot Starter, Audio-X, Steel Magnolia, Tequila Sunrise, Dr Greenthumb, Lightning Strikes (guitar riffs, well done though)

When I first purchased this album I didn't like it at all, even if I listened to it several times... So I thought it was a bad album and I put it away! But despite other albums wich I liked at the beginning and get really boring after hearing it for the fifth time, this one really grew to me! 'Cause after I had put it away for a couple of months I listened to it again and then I liked it more and now, I love it! So people, don't get all disappointed after listening to it for the first time 'cause this really IS a good album, one of the best Cypress Hill albums I guess! The production by Muggs is thight like allways but a little dark and underground, I find this the darkest Cypress Hill album to come out! The flow is outsanding and the lyrics are thight, a real must, this CD... The best tracks are "Checkmate", "From the window of my room", "Steel Magnolia", "Tequila Sunrise" and "Dr Greenthumb" wich is probably the least dark song on the whole album! Well, that's all the information I'm giving you 'bout this, so if you want to know more, buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cypress Hill IV - The Best Yet, January 29, 2000
By A Customer

This album has it all. From the chilling "Checkmate" to the humorous "Dr. Greenthumb" this album is a must for anyone who likes rap, Cypress Hill, weed, and hates cops. Definently the best Cypress Hill album ever. Especially great to crank up if you have a pig living next door.

3.0 out of 5 stars NEEDS MORE REFINEMENT, November 5, 1999

Avid fan since "91" and always will be, but this album seemed to have been rushed. Colombia and Sony need to kick back on the deadlines. On the first, third, and a little on the second album the songs and production seem more real and personal. Almost every cut is bumpin on these albums. Its seems that Cypress always puts out a better album after a so-so previous one,do to bad critisism. After the success of there third album and nothin but good reviews, I think the group relaxed and put out this "alright" album. The songs dont deliver and stick like the previous stuff. It also seems that B-real and Muggs seem to experiment to much on this album with east coast like flows and somewhat distasteful beats that dont linger in the head like "strickly hip-hop" or "hole in your head". You want supurb Cypress, get the previos stuff. Dont get me wrong, these boys still got it! and next album I know is going to be the bump! because of this albums not so good reviews. REMEMBER:CYPRESS DELIVERS UNDER ADVERSITY!

4.0 out of 5 stars cypress hill - "IV", October 15, 2008
This review is from: IV (Audio CD)
Great album by cypress hill....if i could i'd actually give it a 4 and a 1/2. Not a 5 because its not quite a classic but really close. DJ muggs really displays his skills as a producer on this album. The beats go hard!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cypress at there strongest, March 12, 2007
This review is from: IV (Audio CD)
Before my review I would like to ask what has happened to Cypress Hill? They seem to have vanished of the face of the earth? I know Muggs did a record with RZA but where did B Real, Sen and Bobo go? anyhow this record is one of their best I actually think it was better then the dark paranoid predecessor Temples Of Boom. It certainly alot better then the three follow ups which saw them getting worse and worse each time, which is a shame since they started of so well with their fantastic debut and of course the classic Black Sunday. Temples of Boom was abit repetative and too moody for its own good although its still stands today as a good record.

Cypress Hill 4 could quite well be their strongest album to date it has intelligent creative lyrics,a strong producton and humour something thats missing from modern day rap.

The first track Looking Through The Eye Of A Pig is perhaps one of best if not the best Hip Hop song ever written. Its manages to be amusing and yet rather tragic at the same time about the troubled rather sad life of a Los Angeles Police officer who turns out to be just as bad as the criminals and scum he deals with, a superb, brilliantly written song unquestionably the best song on the album.

Dr Greenthumb is another highlight on the album very funny song the title give the story away but its a great song and like with LTTEOAP sees B Real rapping under a character more tongue in cheek a very funny song.

Lightning Strikes is the start of there rock/ Rap phase and out of all of the rockish material this is the best. Great riff and some raw uncompromising vocal delivery from B and Sen.

God how i wish they caried on making records like this, it wouldn't have done their carrer any harm but unfortunatly they went all Nu Metally on us and it kinda ruined them. I only hope they rekindle the magic that they had and make another strong album like this if there still around where are they now?
