Biography

After countless hits, a couple Grammys and millions sold, Terius “The-Dream” Nash is empirically one of the most successful songwriters of the last decade. I have been waiting for The Dream to release a need c.d, and I love every songs on this album.

Most shocking on "Self-Conscious" is the lack of profanity, something that has characterized IV Play more often than not.

I have been a huge Dream fan ever since I heard "Shawty is da *s***" I am a R&B mellow/slow jam type person. I love good cruising music with a harmonious melody. Dream perfected that better than anyone in the world to me, consistently. Album 1-3 were like butter to me. I could not wait till they released, and when I would pop the CD in, I could listen to each song for 30 seconds, and be in love with it. Dream just made that type of music. Tracks like Mr. Yeah, Playing in Her Hair, Rocking that S***, Veteran, Purple Kisses, Luv Songs, etc etc, I could go on and on. Dream was the only artist I could definitely bank on liking 9/10 songs.

Then came the album push backs, time after time after time. It made me wonder if he was loosing it. He released 1977 Free Album, I was so excited, My wife and I were having Dream withdrawals from his genius music. ended up liking 2 songs off the album..... and maybe 2 GREW on me. I began to loose interest. Now comes IV Play. I saw a review that said his music matured, that has to be a young minded person, because songs like "Pus**" and "New Orleans" - Very immature and pointless for my taste. This album has still has some "Old Dream" in it, but I'm not sure how much that will last going forward. I really hope Dream goes back to his roots of what made him very popular in the first place. There are 18 tracks on this, and I have grown to like 8 of them, 2 of those 8 will still have to grow on me some more.

Greatest to least of my 8.

The release of IV PLAY signals a departure from the LOVE TRILOGY, and the debut of a new sound. Ignoring the recurring themes of bedroom fun and grandeur, IV PLAY is indicative of a more mature and influential Terius.

EQUESTRIAN | One of my favourite songs of his. Recalling Ginuwine's PONY, the theme of riding horses as an allegory for 'bedroom adult activities' is uncanny. Again, smooth vocals and dramatic bass make this song fine-wine-refined. We're also treated to Terius' beat-boxing skills, which adds several layers of musicality.

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN | After hearing DIRTY LAUNDRY, I knew this song would be soft-sounding since Kelly's voice is also soft-sounding. It definitely worked. The best feature on the album (sorry Beyoncé), this duet serves us with ethereal piano keys, a driven delicate bass, and near-perfect vocals from both artists. It's not my standout song, but it is definitely underrated, much like Love King's TURNT OUT or Love Hate's PURPLE KISSES. I look forward to any future duets these two have, because their chemistry is wonderful.

TOO EARLY | I admit, before listening to this, I had no clue who Gary Clark Jr was. It only took a couple of videos to realise that Terius made a great choice including his guitar riffs. Despite being auto-tuned to death, he utilises the vocoder wonderfully, and Terius' haunting vocals are a precursor to how far he has come in this industry (watch his A O L Sessions). The song gives me a visual image of Zorro and a modern 2013 Sam Cooke. Terius calls it his favourite song, and I'm not surprised. It's clearly different to anything he's ever done in the past and on this album, and maybe this is the direction he sees himself heading towards.

Everybody is hating way to much. This album has a lot of eltronic and new hip hop sounds so of course it's different. His first 3 albums are all classics so if he decides for a new direction for this one in fine with that I still love dream, not for being part a fad but for his obvious prince, r Kelly, and mj (rip) if you love songs that you can sing along too and need new music check this album out. Can't wait for next 1

The-Dream has established himself as one of urban music's more entertaining artists, producers, and songwriters. His first three albums (all sporting 'Love' in the title) were equally consistent and exceptional. His fourth 'proper' album (fifth if Terius Nash: 1977 is included) IV Play is less enthralling than The-Dream's previous work. Too often on IV Play, The-Dream over-sexualizes, often confusing or generalizing `love' with `freakiness'. A student of the `R. Kelly school' for sure, IV Play has its moments, but it also has its flaws.

"High Art" featuring Jay-Z is a nice sounding record in itself, but ultimately, it is over-simplistic and doesn't compare to a more electrifying record such as "Love King" (from 2010's Love King). The title cut, "IV Play" has superb production work behind it, much like "High Art". While "IV Play" is only concerned with the physical aspects of love, it's enjoyable enough, if one excuses The-Dream's brash hook. "Equestrian" keeps the sensual at the forefront, but does it more cleverly than the overt wordplay of "IV Play". "P****" draws controversy from its tasteless title, but fails to truly deliver a cut worthy of such shock value. Pusha T and Big Sean are on board to lend assistance, but neither seems up to their usual musical level. "Turnt" brings in Beyoncé and 2 Chainz, but still lacks the high level of past triumphs by The-Dream. Even odder is the fact that on Love King, The-Dream previous featured a cut called "Turnt Out".

"Where Have You Been" features Kelly Rowland, whose profile continues to rise.
