3.0 out of 5 stars Jewel Quest 2 is MUCH better, September 27, 2009

General: This is a typical jewel matching game. Match three of a kind to turn the space gold. Turn all the spaces gold and you move on to the next level. Different shaped boards and special characters add difficulty.

Review: I played Jewel Quest 2 and 3 before trying the original and I have to say that I like them better. Jewel Quest 1 goes from easy to nearly impossible much, much too quickly. There are five to ten boards in a level, 5 levels in an "adventure" and 5 total adventures. The first adventure is fun and easy. The second, not too bad either. The third is next to impossible. You have to beat all the boards you've beaten in the past but with monkey bad guys dropping in randomly to screw up your play. Plus, you have to turn every space to silver first then to gold. So every space needs to be covered twice, hidden gems need to be uncovered and then changed twice, all while hundreds of monkeys are dropping in to mess you up. In Jewel Quest 2, there were "special" moves you could save up for when you got to a really tough level. Jewel Quest 1 has none of those so you have to beat every level perfectly every single time. There is no obvious pattern to the monkeys; they seem to drop in whenever you are just about to get that one hard space finished. And there are SO MANY of them. It isn't just a monkey or two once in a while, it is a frickin' herd of them all the time. Sometimes it seems like there are more monkeys than jewels on the board. It is EXTREMELY frustrating and not very fun after a while. It took me six lives or more to beat one of the levels, and several times I was just one impossible-to-get square away from finishing. Having a special move sure would be useful. You get an extra life for every 50,000 points and that doesn't come easy in the later levels. Another difference is that when a jewel is cleared from a space where nothing can drop down from above, that space is out of play--you cannot slot a jewel over into the empty space to maneuver around.

I'm probably not going to make it out of Adventure 3 to see what you have to do in the last two adventures, but goodness knows what they could do to make it even more impossible to beat. I like a challenge as much as the next person, but it has to seem fair and this game doesn't play fair. I think I am going back to Jewel Quest 2 and 3.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fun game ... BUT ..., May 30, 2009

I found this game addictive but also frustrating. The concept of the game is challenging. The programming and gliches are frustrating. I purchased this game and had problems from the first. I kept getting a pop-up screen that said I needed to change my resolutions. I checked everywhere I could think of to find a place where my resolutions did not conform and even had a computer geek/guru check my settings. Settings were ok; the game did not believe it. This box popped up during play and intercepted and slowed down play. The game was very unstable too and would sometimes crash. Mostly the pop-up is what prompted me to take my losses and uninstall the program. Never thought to ask for a refund. Next time I will.

Its a fun game, but I found it got far too challenging far too quickly. Should have been more of an easier rising scale. By about the 5th level in I was frustrated and gave up. I would have liked to have been drawn into it more before it got difficult.
