We always used the Iams adult formula in the green bag for our German Shorthaired Pointer. As she got older she was getting sore and limping after coming in from a run or chasing the ball so she had to slow down on the things she loved to do. Since switching to the Premium Protection Mature formula, she's like a new dog! She's back to her old running and playing and never seems sore after. I was afraid she would end up on pain medications but now, she's back to her old self. If your dog is getting older and slowing down, give this a try, it saved us a lot of vet bills and has given us a happier, healthier dog.

I purchased this for my 12-year-old Pekingese. She has had back issues ever since she was attacked by a coyote two years ago; her back legs slide out from underneath her when she walks. This food has actually helped stabilize her spine and legs. I'm not crazy about a lot of the Iams products, but this one is hands down the best of the bunch. Will purchase until she's no longer with us...

Upon opening the bag, the first thing that caught my attention was the size of the kibble. It's quite a bit smaller than most foods that I've been using lately, but it is like Iams other "mini" kibble varieties, so it's pretty easy to gobble down. On the plus side - easy to eat. On the flip side, it makes me wonder if it really helps a lot more with tartar control if there isn't much crunching going on. Only time will tell on that one.

The calorie count is 320 calories/cup, which is about medium and near the lower end for non-prescription foods. My pooch Niki's prescription Hill's low-calorie food is 244 calories/cup, and there are a few non-prescription foods in the upper 200s (such as Back to Basics Grain-Free Dry Dog Food, Lamb and Potato Recipe at 297 which she also really likes). So, this isn't quite as good for weight loss as some, but it's not energy-packed like a lot of foods that are in the 400-500 calories/cup range. It's a pretty good choice if your dog isn't overly active and doesn't need a lot of calories.

Regarding the Chondroitin and Glucosamine levels in the food, they (as with every food/treat I've ever seen) are significantly below the daily levels recommended by my vet (note that the levels they state are per kilogram, which is about 11 cups of food). Either my vet is way off, or this is more of a marketing thing. I'd say talk to your vet about what he/she would recommend. I give Niki supplements from Trader Joe's, and the levels in this food are so low that it doesn't really throw off the overall daily intake.

Niki eats it, but she's not enthusiastic about it. The nutrition values are pretty good, but not outstanding, IMO. So, it's a decent choice to try, but I won't be running out to get more.

We have three Brazilian mastiffs. I was interested in this chow because our eldest dog (and, confidentially, our favorite), has developed some arthritis of the hip. (This IAMS chow is supposed to have some fish oils that theoretically would help. Too soon to tell.)

We prepared the chow by adding some warm water, a good trick generally for getting dogs to enjoy dry chow a bit more. We doggysat a friend's dog recently who was known as a picky eater and had no problem getting the pup to chow down without complaint with this tactic.

All three dogs, the seven year old, the 2 year old, and the four year old, took immediately to it and finished up every last kibble. So they liked it. We did not notice any marked difference in stool quality, which some have said is a concern. Will update if we notice a difference.

So, from the doggy perspective, a win. But how about from the critical human perspective? Well, according to chow watchdog sites, this chow is made from a pretty low grade of chicken rendering. I'm not sure how I feel about that. It's possible to take concern for doggy nutrition to extremes. I know of one Brazilian mastiff breeder who only feeds his children raw steaks with cloves of garlic stuck in them. He claims amazing results. Meanwhile, it is our experience that too much protein for dogs in warm climates can lead to skin and stool issues. While the chicken renderings sound pretty vile, dogs have evolved to eat human leftovers, so maybe its not so bad. The fish oils are great, some of the other ingredients appear to be pretty dodgy. Meanwhile, actual chicken is far down the list of ingredients. Research carefully and make your own decision. For us, we would certainly consider getting this again.

Recommended with caveats.

It's a combination which is tough to beat, a quality product with balanced nutrition which is recommended by our Veterinarian, and which he loves!

I have been rotatating through a variety of dog foods, a process which ensures that he is getting variety in his diet, and that he doesn't get too bored. There are 2 problems with my system; they are not all the same nutritionally, or of equally high quality, and it makes him fat (animals eat more when there is variety).

On our recent visit, my vet told us to put him on a diet. He is absolutely not thrilled. He liked the pasta my husband was giving him almost nightly, and and the kids refilling his bowl when it got empty. The trouble is that pasta does not have the nutrition her needs, and furthermore, he is now fat. We were told to give him 2/3 his usual amount of food. It is one more reason I am glad to have Iams. I know he is getting a balanced diet, even with less food.

I will add that we tried Iams years ago, purchased at our veterinarian's office. They warned at that time that it might give him gas, and that it did. They must have changed the formula in the intervening time because this time around it is not doing that. He has been eating nothing but Iams for the past several weeks and does not have gas. moreover he still enjoys it, does not seem to be bored or looking for something else. He will always eat more, if we let him, but until he is back to normal weight, he is on a somewhat reduced diet, but one comprised of high nutrition, quality ingredients. Thank you Iams and Amazon. This makes the process a lot easier, and safer.
