5.0 out of 5 stars Mott the Dog thinks this is great., January 4, 2001

Ian Hunter This excellent album from 1975 comes across like a live set. Ian Hunter joins together with ex David Bowie axe man Mick Ronson to create a blistering Rock `n' Roll album, brushing aside the mourning of the recently demised Mott the Hoople, who Hunter had fronted for the past five years. The album commences with the classic "Once Bitten Twice Shy" with the Hunter trademark "Allo". This was a worldwide hit single for Ian, then later covered by Great White and taken to the top of the U.S. charts, this is followed in rapid succession by two funky rockers about life on the road. Closing what in the days of vinyl was the last trackside one is "Boy", probably the most emotional song Ian had written to that point, warning the Rock generation of the perils of the high life, probably dedicated to David Bowie, Ariel Bender or you. "3000 Miles From Here" is a wonderfully tongue in cheek ode to groupies. From here on its power/Rock `n' Roll with Geoff Applby /Bass, Peter Arnesen/Keyboards and Dennis Elliot later of Foreigner/Drums laying down a rock steady beat for Hunter & Ronson to throw down their wares. There's a brief respite while Hunter lays his soul bare with "Shades Off" until Ronson comes crashing back into to take you hurtling along the tracks like a runaway express train to the end of the aptly titled "I Get So Excited". This album contains some of the best songs ever written by Ian Hunter and the guitar playing of the sadly departed Mick Ronson is terrific through out. Mott the Dog.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the finest, January 15, 2005
By
This review is from: Ian Hunter (Audio CD)
Ian Hunter by Ian Hunter and featuring Mick Ronson is one of the finest albums to come out of the seventies. Not only are the songs tight, spirited, and well played, but they seem to have stood the test of time. Listening to them now they sound as good as they did back in 1975 when I first bought the lp and wore it out. Though Hunter may not be a 70's rock and roll poetic genius like Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen or even Paul Simon, he can still write a genuinely captivating song, as can be heard with "Once Bitten, Twice Shy," "Lounge Lizard," or "Boy."

I absolutely love this album, and I would put it in my list of top ten albums from the seventies, which is a difficult task. I think what makes it so great is the combination of Ian Hunter's songwriting and vocals mixed with Mick Ronson's guitar and production work. Ronson is easily one of the most over looked talents from the seventies, and his work with Ian Hunter is simply devine rock and roll. By all means buy this album.

wow! still so powerful after all these years. just asking, but why doesn't this guy get any airplay? ian is definately on a par with any classic rocker, and while the others ride into the sunset collecting royalties he is still cranking out great music. even obts the song somebody else got the accolades. unbelievable! if you like crunching, classic r&r buy his stuff, he deserves it.

This review is from: Ian Hunter (Audio CD)
Ian Hunter joins together ex-Bowie axe master Mick Ronson to create a blistering rock and roll album and in doing so made the mourners of late Mott the Hoople forget what they were sobbing about. From the guitar searing "Once Bitten Twice Shy" (Later to be faithfully & successfully covered by Great White)to the touching lament to a groupie "3000 Miles From Here" Ian Hunter delivers his full range of pure rock n' roll and master songerwriting ability.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent solo debut for Ian Hunter, January 11, 1999

The only things keeping this first Ian Hunter solo album from a 5 start rating is the poor production/cd sound quality and a couple of weak tunes in the middle of the disk. But, songs as good as "Once Bitten" and the final 4 songs make for a dynamic rock n roll listening experience. Here's a hint for aspiring metal/hard rock bands: you need only search through the Ian Hunter song catalog to find material good enough to make you sound like the next great rock band. An added benefit is a lot of rock fans won't even recognize the songs as remakes. It will always amaze me that so much great rock n roll has been put out by Hunter and the late great Mick Ronson, that is so under appreciated. This album is a great starting point to check out their prolific collaborations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ian Hunter, February 23, 2000

For two decades, Ian Hunter has wandered around my life with me - AS AN EVER WELCOME SPIRIT. Boy, is a track that is still so relevent, Ian writes lyrics that last. All of the tracks form an exciting album that I can't tire of - who would want to? If you can't decide whether to buy this album, jump -you won't be disappointed.

All the reviews here are right-on in their appraisal of this glam classic. On his first solo album after Mott, Hunter ups the "crunch" a little bit by bringing Mick Ronson along. Ronson's solo on "Lounge Lizard" is one of my all-time favorites, illustrating how to play rock lead without a lot of multi-note flourish. Ian Hunter is/was a great songwriter, lots of real strong stuff here. A Must-Own disc (especially at this price)

5.0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!, March 11, 1999

The emotion on this record is so intense you can taste it. Yeah the CD doesn't sound great but the record is one of IAN's best. Mick Ronson's performance is a must have for any fan. His passing is a loss for the entire music community.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Music, July 5, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Ian Hunter (Audio CD)
This album has one of the greatest rock songs ever written as it's opener. It's got great ballads and great rockers. It's also got Mick Ronson on guitar. If you love rock n' roll and really beautiful ballads then get this album. If you love tasty, ...kicking guitar solos, then get this album. It ain't all great, but there's enough here to make it a classic. If you've heard Great White's version of "Once Bitten Twice Shy", you've gotta hear the original.

5.0 out of 5 stars The last great Mott the Hoople album, September 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Ian Hunter (Audio CD)
All the stuff that was intended for the follow-up to "The Hoople," if the band hadn't self-destructed. Mick Ronson would have been a great addition, but Mott couldn't handle being a supergroup. A first-rate album with several classics. "Once Bitten Twice Shy" is so much better than Great White's lame version.
