4.0 out of 5 stars Great book about a great man., May 29, 2008
So far this is the best biography of Ian McKellen there is. It may not be the best book ever but its the best we will have until hopefully Sir McKellen graces us with his own autobiography.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Life and Art of Ian McKellen, December 26, 2007
By Shakespeare (The Maine Woods) - See all my reviews
Let's be brief. This biography is "unauthorized," which means it contains virtually none of McKellen's recollections, realizations, and human wisdom -- out of which of course a great actor understands and creates theatrical interpretation. The facts are here, and so what? How did this actor come to see the world as he does? Why is he unique among gay-rights activists? How can he understand one aspect or play of Shakespeare, and be blind to the wisdom of another? Every question an earnest biographer would ask when dealing face to face with a master of his art is missing from the book, because the author never got to ask them or Sir Ian to reflect upon them. So if you want to know the c.v. of a prominent British actor, this book will serve. If you want to listen to one transcendental answer from Sir Ian reflecting on seven decades of a remarkable life, wait for an autobiography.
