Once upon a time, Ibiza was a spiritual and magical place. Every sunset, people gathered at Jose Padilla's ornately decorated little beachside bar to be hypnotized by his unique sunset DJ mix and stare dreamily out to sea. The first Café del Mar album encapsulates this mystical experience, beginning lightly and airily with Jose's own dolphinesque "Agua" then progressing to darker, bassier sounds like Underworld and Ver Vlads to represent the sun falling behind the horizon. Jose creates a spellbinding atmosphere by placing oddities such as Penguin Cafe Orchestra alongside dance tracks that take inspiration from world and New Age music (ethereal female vocals, bongo-lead percussion, samples of self-hypnosis tapes, flutes, wave sounds). Highlights include the resonant piano and strings of Sabres of Paradise's "Smokebelch" beatless mix. The sky fades to black with the gentle ambience of "Sunset at the Caf´ del Mar." Café del Mar was "compiled with love" and thus truly stands the test of time. A great beginning to a classic compilation series. --Sarah Champion

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't fall for the use of the Cafe del Mar name, June 1, 2001

First of all, be advised that the extremely favorable Amazon review above is misplaced: it is for the wonderful first volume of the superb Cafe Del Mar series by Jose Padilla, and not for this egregious rip-off of a CD. This terrible CD is a tossed-off collection of dull, repetitive dance tracks. It is neither a successful dance compilation, nor a collection that bears any similarity to the Jose Padilla Cafe Del Mar series (which are not, strictly speaking dance records, but closer to trip hop -- they are "chill," but with more energy). There is not a good, engaging dance track on this record. I have no idea how this cranked-out piece of forgettable music acquired the use of the Cafe del Mar name, but it is an unfortunate marketing device designed to lure devotees into buying a lackluster, uninspired CD. There are a number of other CD's out there that also bear the Cafe del Mar name, but my advice is stick to volumes one through six of the original Cafe del Mar series.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cafe del Nada, August 1, 2000

Buyer beware - especially you CDM faithful! This disc has all the appeal of day old toast. The collection is unrelenting, one-dimensional, shrink-wrapped pop. The only things missing are commercials between each track! I'm dumbfounded that this disc carries the Cafe del Mar brand.

I'll definately sail this one out the window.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smoother than smooth can be..., February 21, 2000

This is the special sound of the island called balearic-tunes. First class House-music at its best. When the sun goes down and the night is about to begin, this smooth music gives you the best start... If you have ever been to Cafe del mar, Sa Trincha, KM 5 or Particular you know whats about it... SMOOOOTH...(6 STARS)
