3.0 out of 5 stars Year 2 update
I purchased these for a set of cement stairs leading to our basement. We have small children and I was concerned about slip and falls...and stitches and lost teeth (the paranoia of the parent). The mats themselves are not particularly complex. They appear to be some sort of light rubber/plastic hybrid that compress when stepped on. They do seem to keep ice from...

These really are a good idea and work better than you would think. The concept is that there is a small amt of give in the mat so your weight cracks the ice. I stapled one set directly on the wood steps from my deck. My only complaint is that they are not very heavy, so on stairs where they are not tacked down, they WILL blow away.

I use these on my steps and even the walkway to the driveway. Work great. I even put a whole in one with a shovel and it still works.

3.0 out of 5 stars Year 2 update, January 11, 2012

I purchased these for a set of cement stairs leading to our basement. We have small children and I was concerned about slip and falls...and stitches and lost teeth (the paranoia of the parent). The mats themselves are not particularly complex. They appear to be some sort of light rubber/plastic hybrid that compress when stepped on. They do seem to keep ice from forming into a solid block of danger and they help keep people focused on the stair tread when walking. To keep them on the steps I used silicone dabs at each corner. This works for a few months but inevitably one comes loose and needs to be reattached. Not really a big deal and, honestly, it holds better than I thought it would. When the mats do come loose they still stay put and don't seem to be dangerous. All in all for 5 cement steps this seems to help. I would like to see them bundled together and discounted rather than having to buy them one at a time.
