5.0 out of 5 stars Giving Women Permission To Be Themselves, April 25, 2001

This review is from: Ice Cream for Breakfast : If You Follow All The Rules, You MIss Half the Fun (Hardcover)
Ice Cream for Breakfast is the book that women have been waiting for. It gives readers permission to be themselves and to go beyond the silly rules that inhibit well-deserved joy. Leslie Levine is an advocate for all of us good girls who need permission to circumvent the rules we feel bound by even when they no longer serve us. Her book is liberating in that she gives us permission to do and feel what our gut has told us all along. Bravo for Ice Cream for Breakfast!!!

Gosh, I love this book. I wish I'd had its lovely, practical wisdom to use in answering all the people who've ever said to me, "Would you lighten up?" Now I know how. And it's fun. (This is also a BEAUTIFUL book -- terrific gift for Mother's Day, birthdays, best friends, uptight bosses, etc.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Even the one who makes the rules needs to break them!, March 17, 2001

This book was a welcome respite in a busy week filled with working too hard, keeping up with kid's schedules and trying to have a life all at the same time. For busy parents trying to keep everything together and set rules and expectations for their kids, it is great fun to read Ms. Levine's witty , thoughtful and often touching take on how to approach life with fun and grace. Her advice on how to do the unexpected, break the rules we set, usually because it is just how we think we should act, and create special moments for ourselves and our families and friends is a wonderful antidote to stress and tension. I am ordering more to give to friends who really need this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars De-stress. Be a child for awhile and have FUN FUN FUN!, March 19, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Ice Cream for Breakfast : If You Follow All The Rules, You MIss Half the Fun (Hardcover)
This is one of the most upbeat, creative collections of FUN I've ever had the pleasure to read. Suggestions such as "Sing at the Top of Your Lungs," "Play in the Dirt," and "Cry Over Spilled Milk" remind us that there's more to life than being mature and responsible, a little letting go can go a long way. Along with each suggestion comes author Leslie Levine's witty commentary as well as quotes from some favorite contemporary novelists. Ice Cream is poignant primer on countering life's little trials, tragedies, and tribulations!

5.0 out of 5 stars I eat icecream for breakfast., April 20, 2001

This review is from: Ice Cream for Breakfast : If You Follow All The Rules, You MIss Half the Fun (Hardcover)
One time when my husband was on a business trip, my child, who at the time, was about 6 years old, came down for breakfast. When I asked him what he wanted for breakfast, he replied very nonchalantly, "an icecream sundae." I'm sure he was watching me out of the corner of his eye, to see what i'd do.Very matter- of -factly, I said, "Sure. What do you want on it?" We then proceeded to have icecream sundaes for breakfast, and I'm positive that my son will remember that day forever. In fact, whenever he has a friend sleep over, (he's now 11) he frequently tells his friends that "I'm the mother who serves icecream for breakfast" - and I'd venture to say that I've now gained a reputation among his friends as "the icecream lady" - - and we do have a lot of sleep-overs!! I love Leslie Levine's new book, and the concept behind it. Life certainly presents numerous opportunities to be taken seriously... and if we can allow ourselves to indulge in pleasure, just for the sake of being frivilous...perhaps we'll even live longer!

5.0 out of 5 stars Put the bowls and spoons out the night before, April 19, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Ice Cream for Breakfast : If You Follow All The Rules, You MIss Half the Fun (Hardcover)
In ICE CREAM FOR BREAKFAST, Leslie Levine takes the reader by the hand and offers excellent advice about how to "stay centered and high above the frenzy that plagues our fast-paced lives." Many of us have forgotten who we are. Read it cover to cover and then keep it by your bed so you will be able to turn to it whenever you need a reminder to enjoy life's journey. For instance, Leslie advises, "the next time someone tries to rattle you with "the look," mentally draw a mustache above the lips. If you have time, scribble in a couple horns and a tail, too." When you are stressed, "let a little laughter in - it's like shedding a strip of light into an otherwise darkened room -- a glimpse of hope, a glimmer of possibility."

Leslie Levine has given us a reason to cheer: we don't have to follow the rules and do exactly what we're supposed to all the time. When you're running around, doing errands, keeping track of jobs and kids and house and pets, driving back and forth to the dentist, the post office, and the cleaners--you NEED this book to make you smile and remember what life is really all about!

This wise, warm-hearted and witty primer is a great mood-booster and moral-supporter for anyone whose outlook on life could use a little freshening. I recommend it for both a few quick takes in the morning and longer doses of beach-reading.
