Beefheart's last album, and one of his greatest accomplishments....,
This review is from: Ice Cream for Crow (Audio CD)
This is Captain Beefheart's final album, and it's one of his greatest albums, if not the greatest. It's as unique as Trout Mask Replica, and just as brilliant. I bought this when it came out, not knowing it would be the Captain's final album. I love the title track, one of Beefheart's best songs ever. The instrumental Semi-Multicolored Causcasian is one of Beeheart's most intricate compositions, with Gary Lucas and Jeff "Morris" Tepper shining during this track. The titles of the songs here are superb (along with the songs themselves). I love Hey Garland, I Dig Your Tweed Coat, Skeleton Makes Good, and The Past Sure Is Tense. Beefheart never really achieved any commercial success here in the States (though he charted in the U.K. quite often), and decided to leave the world of rock and roll after this album to paint full time. He is an excellent painter, and he said in interviews that he wanted to concentrate on one or the other, and he picked the latter. One of his painting adores the Doc at the Radar Station album (another late gem from him). He is suffering from multiple scerorsis, and the Captain may not be with us much longer. But this album will be with us for a long time. It's brilliant, and even though Beefheart didn't say it was his final album at the time, it's still a great way to go out.

Improved version of a solid Beefheart release,

If you own only one Beefheart disc, it needs to be "Trout Mask Replica". If you own three or more, this should be one of them.
Compared to the original Virgin CD release, this remaster offers improved sound, a 12 page insert with newly written liner notes describing the sessions, and an extra track, "Light Reflected off the Oceans of the Moon", which is a Beefheart sax solo over the rhythm section of "Hey Garland, I Dig Your Tweed Coat".
