Book Description

April 14, 2009

"How is it that a humble ice cream cone vies for icon status with JoePa and the Nittany Lion Shrine? What is so unique about Penn States Berkey Creamery . . . that causes it to grow when other college creameries have been shrinking or disappearing altogether? What draws business professionals from all over the world to Penn State to learn the secrets of ice cream making in our famous Ice Cream Short Course? How did [Penn State] become 'Ice Cream U'? . . . Penn State is famous for many accomplishments, beautiful campuses, outstanding faculty and students, successful alumni, and much more. This book concentrates on one of its most popular achievements—the Creamery—and how it has become one of Penn States great success stories." —From the Introduction

From a modest start, the Creamery gradually developed into an internationally respected center for dairy education and research. Professional respect for the Creamery across the globe is matched by the enthusiasm of Penn State fans and alumni who consider the Creamery to be home to some of their happiest memories. Local author and historian Lee Stout weaves together stories of the Creamery and Pennsylvania's agricultural past with a lighthearted and enlightening look at our enduring love affair with milk products and ice cream.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love Penn State!, October 13, 2009
By
This review is from: Ice Cream U: The Story of the Nation's Most Successful Collegiate Creamery (Hardcover)
This well written, easy read is a fun, informative coffee-table album, filled with historical black and white and modern color photographs. These 72 pages are a scoop of Happy Valley served up with unabashed Nittany Lion Pride, a must-have for every alumni. Non Penn Staters beware: this tantalizing glimpse of the charm and grace of the University will leave you salivating for your own taste of your favorite flavor. Be forewarned; prolonged exposure to Berkey Creamery products may lead to matriculation and ultimately graduation.

Read about Penn State's Role in the growth of Pennsylvania's dairy business. Look back with a brief history of ice cream. Revisit the early days of the Patternson Hall and the Community Dairy Business. Which of your favorite flavors learned to be great at the Ice Cream Short Course? Not so long ago, Borland Lab was the source of Ice Cream sales. And what of the current Ice Cream phenomenon? Look to the future of the Berkey Creamery. Smiling student servers offer up the Hall of Fame flavors. Meet the dedicated faculty in a nostalgic family album of the Creamery staff. Follow the milk from cow to cone. And most importantly, meet the Holsteins, the sweet and lovely bovine ladies to whom we owe so very much.

I love Penn State, and you should love your school so much too!
