Book Description

Spectator Guide Series September 1996
As the National Hockey League continues its expansion in the 1990s, the number of hockey spectators has increased dramatically- the Stanley Cup Finals are now seen in over 120 countries- while merchandise sales have exploded from $150 million annually in 1990 to over $1 billion today. Yet hockey is still the least understood of all American sports. This easy-to-read guide, filled with illustrations and action photographes, contains everything for the fan and non-fan alike to understand and enjoy the sport of ice hockey.

About the Author

P.J. Harari and Dave Ominsky co-authored this book while pursuing their MBAs at the Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA. However, it was while working as an attorney prior to enrolling in business school that Harari first came upon the idea for a Spectator Guide. Her clients often conducted business meetings at basketball or hockey games and she spent her time feigning interest or pretending to understand what was going on.Harari went in search of a book of rules hoping to solve her dilemma. Surely the local library would have something, she thought, or perhaps a local bookstore. But she had no luck. She resorted to teaching herself football by watching games on television, weekend after weekend of sitting alone in her living room. Harari did the same with hockey and basketball. And as her expertise grew, she was visited by peers, male and female alike, who would close her office door and quietly confide that they knew nothing about sports and desperately needed or want --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ice Hockey, January 8, 2002
By
Shelley A. Paiko (Plymouth, MN United States) - See all my reviews
This book is wonderfully writen and easy to understand for people who want to learn the basics of hockey. I have been an occasional spectator of the sport since 1965 and enjoy watching high school, college and professional games (especially the Minnesota Wild!). Unfortunately, I wasn't familiar with all of the rules and types of penalties (except for of course, high sticking, hooking and slashing). So just the other day, while watching an intense college game, I decided it was time to buy a book. I am pleased with my selection and am buying another copy for my friend. By the way, were women!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book for an introduction to hockey, October 12, 2007
Needs to be updated to reflect significant rule changes in NHL in last 3 years, but otherwise it is a good introduction to hockey. Has lots of good, clear illustrations. The greatest value of this book is the illustrations of referee signals since when watching amateur hockey or league hockey the ref's signal is not announced over a PA system.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beginner Hockey Fans!, March 23, 2007
I liked this book very much. It's a great book for the beginner hockey fan. The games are more enjoyable for me to watch. I know there are more in-depth hockey books on the market, but this is a great starting point.
