Oz is back!!!,
This review is from: The Ice King of Oz (Paperback)
For Oz fans, the announcement of a new line of comics based on OZ was met with some tiny hope for something good, but more we felt fear that placing the OZ world in the pages of a comic would cheapen it, or that the writer and artist would not be up to the task. Wow, after reading the first issues, we knew OZ was back!!!This is the third book in the new series, after The Enchanted Apples of Oz, and The Secret Island of Oz. I just could not get over how the graphic novels by Eric Shanower gave the OZ stories a new life. His writing and illustrations showed he is a true fan of the original tales, his books are very respectful to the original characters, settings, and storyline of L. Frank Baum. And when he introduces new characters, they are very much in line with what we would expect from the original author of the Oz books. I do not want to spoil the story for you, so I will just say that in this tale, Glinda the Good Witch calls a council meeting of some of our most beloved characters from OZ, when Princess Ozma is kidnapped by the Ice King. Dorothy, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Man are assigned the task, along with a new character you will love. And of course a new villain to chill you to the bone. The book has it all, magic, fantasy, terrific action panels where appropriate really bring the Oz world to life. In my opinion the 1987 first printing has richer colors and better paper compared to the reprints, but that's just me. I highly recommend this for adults or young readers.
