Art/Design

A playful look at how effective design can restore civility, community, and joy to modern society - now in paperback!

In Bill Stumpf's incisive book, he argues that good design is not about fashion, but about quality of life. The ice palace of the title refers to an elaborate construction built in St. Paul in 1992; for Stumpf, this castle symbolizes a sense of community and a love of play that has been lost in the wake of America's quest for speed and efficiency. Among his pet peeves are cramped airplanes, run-down taxis, aspirin bottle caps, malls, burglar alarms, and grocery bags with no handles. Things don't have to be this way, he assures us, as he offers many whimsical and practical alternatives.

"In a sometimes rambling, occasionally crotchety, often nostalgic, but consistently engaging book, Stumpf exhorts us to recapture those qualities that he classifies as 'civility.'" Publishers Weekly

"Some of the best moments in Stumpf's small book of reflections come in his doubts about the work of colleagues who believe that doing something has got to be better than just standing there." Los Angeles Times

"A creative plea for better design." Washington Post

Bill Stumpf is the designer of, among other products, the Aeron chair, which is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He lives in Minneapolis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book even if your not a designer, September 6, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Ice Palace That Melted Away: How Good Design Enhances Our Lives (Paperback)
This book doesn't discuss the "how's" of design, but rather the "why's". A question I'm always asking. He inspires the designer to restore quality to life using our best ammunition, Design. My favorite chapter was on his fight for the plain old brown bag. Why should we be a walking advertisement everytime we carry a bag? (or wear a t-shirt?) He entreats designers to recognize the social power they have and to respect that power. A great book!

4.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars...but not for this edition, November 13, 2006

This review is from: Ice Palace That Melted Away: How Good Design Enhances Our Lives (Paperback)
The book is fabulous for all readers--5 stars are not enough-- yet you would be better served to seek the original hardcover. Its charming author sketches here are seen without detail-- almost blob-like in comparison on cheaper paper-- presumably to make this an affordable text resource for many design courses embracing Stumpf's philosophy. The price of fame...a not-too-civil service to either his high design standards or any readers who would appreciate original renderings. Sadly, the superb story-spinner author himself "melted away" this summer after enhancing so many of our lives!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Design Plays Here, September 22, 2006

This review is from: Ice Palace That Melted Away: How Good Design Enhances Our Lives (Paperback)
A book on how we might live better and gain more enjoyment from life if we had more civil perspective in design. Many personal stories serve as background to the issues of good and bad design and how we interact with and use what we build. This quote from page 78 might sum up the definition of questionable design, "The sign at the exit ramp said REST STOP/NO FACILITIES,..."
