Editorial Reviews

Review

Unlike some sci-fi authors who create settings that are so far-fetched they aren't believable, Halstead writes about a future world that is very real and plausible. The author does an excellent job of exploring how far people will go to ensure their own survival. I thoroughly enjoyed "Ice Princess" and hope the author continues with a 3rd installment! -Kim Dawe

The truly amazing thing is how much of a story Jason Halstead fits into a novella of this length - it was very impressive! He keeps the action tight and the plot moving quickly along - nothing is described, mentioned or talked about that doesn't relate to the overall story. "Ice Princess" is the sort of novella that allows you to really sink your teeth into it. - Katy Sozaeva

From the Author

Ice Princess was a story that used me and left me cast aside. I had plans for it. I'd plotted and even constructed an outline of how I wanted it to go. As it unfolded the characters comandeered my hands and my brain, yanking them away from my attempts to control them and demanding I tell a story different from that I'd oringally intended.

The end result is contained in this book. I found it touching and compelling to write, and even found myself affected by a few points in the book in a way that I might normally consider less than manly.

One final note on one of the locations where Ice Princess unfolds. I lived in Moab, Utah, for a year and knew I had to write about it. Southeastern Utah is an absolutely beautiful place that I recommend for anybody who enjoys nature, hiking, off-roading, mountain biking, or just seeing a landscape that takes your breath away go and visit.

2.0 out of 5 stars Does not compare to the 1st book November 30, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
***There are SPOILERS in this review!***

Oh I wanted to like this book so much! I loved the 1st book "Wanted", and was quite disappointed when it ended so suddenly! So I had to buy the sequel. I wish I hadn't. Totally ruined it for me.

To start, there were so many typos/grammatical errors, and sentences that just didn't make sense (or words were out of order, what's with that?). Yes, there were a few in the 1st book, but this seemed very sloppy in comparison. Did the author hurry this out in response to the popularity of the 1st?

Second, the characters all underwent personality changes! I can understand why Carl did, brain damage and all, but Jessie went from being a relatively strong, capable woman in "Wanted" to a weak, simpering, needy annoyance in "Ice Princess". I liked her in the 1st book, hated her in the 2nd. Dustin wasn't even in this book other than a few mentions, but he ends up being the bad guy? I'm not going to complain about Carl, because with brain damage you expect personality changes, but I did not like him in this book. And Tanya lived up to the title of the book.

I didn't like the addition of new characters either. I expected more focus on Tanya and Jessie, but Sarah was more of the focus, and I tried to like her, but she grated on my nerves as well.

Also, it was so short! Under 3000 locations. After "Wanted" being a full-length novel (and free, and fantastic!), this was such a disappointment. If there was a 3rd book, I would not buy it. So disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, check it out! September 28, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Tanya Kurkova is known as the Ice Princess; a sniper, and someone who is entirely inner-directed,with no emotional investment in those around her . Her companion is Jessie Banks, formerly an actress but now on the run with Tanya. They have arrived in Moab, UT, one of the places which still has some vestiges of civilization after the nuclear bombs, the sickness and economic collapse - they help with hunting and watching the incoming road for potentially dangerous visitors, such as raiders.

Sgt. Carl Weathers works for Maelstrom Security - he was shot in the head by the daughter of a billionaire client. Carl was trying to rescue her from kidnappers, but the girl had turned and shot him in the head before he could escape with her. With the help of experimental biotechnology, provided by the billionaire client, Carl was put back together and given a digital brain, which allows him to store new memories, and perform tasks that he otherwise would be unable to do. He is still trying to find the girl again.

Sarah Gibson is a bounty hunter, and also does deliveries - whatever she needs to do to get by. Her sister, Ashley (also known as Trixie) is a waitress/dancer/courtesan in Las Vegas. Sarah wants to find the "big haul" that will allow her to save her sister from this lifestyle, and also enable Sarah to retire, taking only jobs she cares about doing. She is helping deliver medical supplies to Moab, UT when she recognizes Tanya, who used to be a gymnast and of whom Sarah was a fan, and after she tells Ashley about it, Ashley contacts one of her clients, who is looking for the girl.

This is a complex story, with lots of back-story that is revealed throughout the process. The truly amazing thing is how much of a story Jason Halstead fits into a novella of this length - it was very impressive! He keeps the action tight and the plot moving quickly along - nothing is described, mentioned or talked about that doesn't relate to the overall story. "Ice Princess" is the sort of novella that allows you to really sink your teeth into it, and enjoy it on an afternoon or a flight - sometime when you have some time on your hands, but don't want to spend the time to read a full novel. I highly recommend this very interesting, post-apocalyptic story of the ties that a person develops between family and friends, and the creation of those ties.

Very good follow-up book. It could be read byy itself, but I would not recommend it, as the background storry is very important. There were some surprising plot twists, too.

More About the Author

Short version: Jason Halstead is a science fiction and fantasy author who spends his free time with his wife and two children, writing, and powerlifting.

Long version: Jason's always wanted to write, but making a living at it seemed unobtainable. So instead of writing fiction, he turned to writing code. That paid the rent and let him dabble in fiction.

The common theme shared by almost every great writer is perseverance. Refusing to accept denial by traditional publishing and agents, Jason was finally accepted at a publisher that was harnessing the cresting wave of ebooks. That ride, although bumpy, gave him the experience and knowledge necessary to strike out and improve his craft.

Jason now has multiple books out and regularly helps out other budding authors struggling to makes sense of the industry. He's a stickler on editing and professionalism, but also believes wholeheartedly that his readers aren't just customers, they're his friends. He wants to know them and encourages them to visit his website (http://www.booksbyjason.com), his blog (http://booksbyjason.wordpress.com), and even more to email him (jason@booksbyjason.com) so he can interact with them. His books come from his imagination and from his heart, and more than one of his friends has inspired him and shown up for at least a cameo appearance in one of his titles.
