Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6–9—Latta interviewed a variety of Antarctic scientists and volcanologists in order describe their diverse experiences, responsibilities, and educations. Both books contain scientific terminology and explanations. Lava Scientist, in particular, contains some textbooklike explanations of plate tectonics and other geologic terms that could be difficult for struggling readers. The final chapter describes careers in volcanology. Ice Scientist looks at life on a research vessel and offers a bit about the primary specializations in the field of oceanography. The books' greatest strength is in the variety of firsthand accounts and the scientists' breadth of experience. Both books have appealing color photographs and an attractive design that will appeal to general readers as well as to those interested in pursuing these exciting careers.—Marcia Kochel, Olson Middle School, Bloomington, MN

4.0 out of 5 stars Ice Scientist: Careers in the Frozen Antarctic, February 18, 2009
This review is from: Ice Scientist: Careers in the Frozen Antarctic (Wild Science Careers) (Library Binding)
The eight chapters of Ice Scientist have short overviews of people with careers as scientists in the Antarctic region. The many colored photographs, clear, concise text about scientists in the 1900s and their jobs in the frozen Antarctic provide real drama and relevance for the reader. Topics like diinosaurs, worm herders, the Ice Man, and the South Pole time machine will grab the interest of children and provide science information along the way. The index, glossary, further reading and list of web sites makes this a jumping off point for further study of the Antarctic. This title could be used for career exploration, the study of scientists or for just plain adventurous reading. Recommended for elementary students.
