Book Description

1401804055 978-1401804053 August 27, 2003 1
For students in food service and culinary arts programs at community and private colleges, Ice Sculpting the Modern Way, is a collaborated effort by three professional chefs who have extensive, but varied experiences in culinary education and the foodservice industry. The sculpting mastery of chefs Finch and Maxfield, combined with the concise writing ability of Chef Garlough, make for a truly remarkable text on ice sculpture. Unlike other ice sculpting books on the market, this text was specifically formatted for the classroom learner, with chapter features that include key word lists and parts, consisting of thirteen chapters, that lead the reader through the foundation basics to advanced skill training. Another inspired feature of Ice Sculpting the Modern Way is its approach to teaching the craft of ice sculpting. Students are given insights and exercises relative to the art of sculpting, prior to touching the ice. Students learn about the sculpting process, and are provided with exercises to improve their sculpting skills. The use of modern power tools makes this text truly unique among sub-zero art books. The authors honor the past with a respectful treatment of the traditional ice tools: handsaw, chipper and chisels. However, this text emphasizes the use of power tools to masterfully create the ice pieces. No other text on the market goes into such detail using power tools.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Teaching Ice Sculpture, September 6, 2003

WOW! I've been waiting for an ice-sculpture book like this for years. As a chef-instructor that who has taught ice-sculpture as part of my Garde Manger class, it's been hard to find a book for the classroom. This text book has everything I need, including chapters on art, using power tools, safty, lighting, fusing, colouring ice, transportation, competitions, plus a lot more. The photos are great, with hundreds devoted to step by stepdirections on how to carve many interesting sculptures. The bookis well organized for instruction, withchapter objectives, keywoprds and a huge glossary of terms. I understand there is alsoa teacher's guide, but have not seen it yet. My only complaint is that the book was printed in soft cover. But for my students, the value is great. you can't beat this book, especially for the price. No boubt, it's the best ice-sculpture book on the market for teaching yourself or others to sculpt ice!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just the book I needed!, December 30, 2004
By
Buddy Gott (New Castle, DE USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ice Sculpting the Modern Way (Paperback)
I'm not one to brag, but sculpting things out of wood always came very naturally to me. I recently sculpted a wooden statue of Pat Sajak that would knock your socks off. It's so life-like that it's almost scary.

However, with wood comes a lot of splinters. I've got enough problems in my life already without that kind of extra hardship added. That's why I chose to give up wood sculpting and take up ice sculpting instead.

This here book has shown me that I can do it! In virtually no time at all, I've taken what I've learned from this book and created several great ice sculptures. I've had countless hours of fun doing it!

I'm not a total expert yet, but I'm getting there. In fact, I'm making a new ice sculpture right now that I'm bringing to a convention this weekend. It's a convention for Saved By The Bell fans (we call ourselves "saved.") My ice sculpture is going to be of Dustin Diamond, who played Screech on the show.

If it weren't for this book, I'd never have learned what I needed to know about ice sculpting! Now I can make ice sculptings of all my heroes. After Dustin Diamond, I'm going to try my hand at an ice sculpture of actor Gary Coleman. I won't need too much ice. (Ha ha)

I hope everyone enjoys this book as much as I did. Happy sculpting to you all!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book with lots of information, February 26, 2007
This review is from: Ice Sculpting the Modern Way (Paperback)
Purchased this book to learn ice sculpting. Found the book to be full of information on all aspects of ice sculpting. I would have preferred a bit more information on power tools, fusing, and snow filled logos, and less information on ice scuplting contests, transportation, and ice sculpting as a business, but this is only because of my specific needs. This book has provided me with enough information to undertake ice scuplting in my workplace, which is what I wanted. Book contains several projects complete with templates and step by step instructions with photos, one of which I will be using this upcoming easter. Overall, I consider it to have been money well spent!
