Grade 4-8-- Each of these titles provides a brief history of the winter Olympic events, but focuses on the personalities and memorable performances within each sport. Skiing includes Nordic and Alpine and has special sections on Eddie Edwards (the Eagle), the Goitschel Sisters, and Franz Klammer. Ice Sports includes bobsledding, ice hockey, figure skating, pairs skating, ice dancing, and speedskating. Both books have introductory information in bold print, beautiful full-color photographs of contemporary Olympians, and good-to-excellent quality black-and-white pictures of earlier athletes. The profuse photographs are captioned but do not always correspond to the text. The information about people, successful and unsuccessful, adds spark to all the dates and figures, which are at times confusing.
