Editorial Reviews

It's exactly what electronic pop should sound like in 2013. Fresh, euphoric, youthful...it more than delivers on the promise of 2008 s million-selling debut Walking On A Dream and the fantastical imagery that made them a festival highlight wherever Steele strapped on his head-dress, said Q, awarding the album four stars in a lead review. MOJO noted, you can t help but be charmed by their puckish, wide-eyed enthusiasm for the redemptive power of pop. Nearly every track is powered by a room-rattling disco groove, observed Uncut, scoring it 8/10. But what makes DNA , Alive , Concert Pitch and the title song so irresistible is the way their silky melodies resolve into super-saturated Technicolor chorus hooks.

Customer Reviews

If you like dance music, techno music, then you will enjoy this album.

I was really looking forward to their 2nd album, and this one is just as good as the first!!!
GEORGIA ROCKWELL
The rest of the album is also good, with just one or two weaker songs.

Let's face it, I don't think they will ever top the single "Walking on a Dream". I still play it regularly and even watch the awesome video from time to time. There were some downright awful songs from the album but Standing On The Shore, Half Mast and We Are The People were all top 10 in my book and made the album worth every penny.

This new album has a nice dreamy relaxing sound. Right now I'll Be Around is playing and I definitely feel like I am standing next to them on the Ice Dune! Some songs have an instant attraction while others will probably grow on me and turn into favorites as time goes by. I noticed some of these songs just end, there isn't really a gradual ending - just an observation. Either way this album is a great follow up and I am already anticipating their next offering, too soon...?

PS: $6.99 for the entire MP3 Album! What a steal! Perhaps a Luke Steele...

06/20 Update: DON'T BUY THIS ALBUM! Unless.....you plan on waking up in the morning singing these highly addictive mesmerizing songs! Hopefully this band "will be around for awhile". Can't say enough good things about this disc. At age 40, I am probably not in their normal fan base but this is just proof that good music knows no age limit.

"Ice on the Dune" is the second album from Australia's Empire of the Sun, the follow up to their 2008 release "Walking on a Dream." The group is comprised of Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore (who is also in Pnau and whose 2012 "Good Morning to the Night" featuring remixes of Elton John's `70s catalog is recommended).

As a child of the 80s, Empire of the Sun remind me of the German group Alphaville, especially "Afternoons in Utopia" era Alphaville. They projected an image of being somehow unearthly and in "Afternoons" produced an album which reflected this quality while also creating perfect pop and dance beats. Empire of the Sun have done the same with their distinctive visual image and creating music which is unique and otherworldly, while also being consumable, enjoyable, and infectious.

I was a big fan of Empire's debut "Walking on a Dream" and rest assured they have not encountered a sophomore slump with "Ice on the Dune." "Ice" is unmistakably Empire of the Sun and this becomes clear in the first few seconds of the slow synthpop perfection of second track "DNA." Other standouts on the album include first single and instantly danceable "Alive;" the driving near-instrumental"Old Flavours;" as well as "Awakening" and "Celebrate." Luke Steele has stated in interviews that "Concert Pitch" is his favorite track from the album, and it certainly is a good one, though not one of my favorites. Pretty much every track on this disc is a good one, the only one I really didn't care for was the album closer "Keep a Watch" which slows things down a bit too much, with its lethargic tempo and vocal track which is inconsistent with the rest of the album.

Overall, this is fantastic synthpop with soaring choruses, fantastic hooks, and a surplus of dance beats.

I still can't get enough of Walking on a Dream album and I've been playing it dozens of times since 2009. It's one of the best albums ever in my opinion. I was really looking forward to their second album. From the very beginning you know it's Empire of the Sun. It's more dreamy and more main stream compared to the first album. But that doesn't bother me. I just wish they sounded more acoustic, more guitars and real drums and less samples and vocoders. I still give this album 5 starts because each and every song is very catchy, fun and enjoyable.

Recently, while listening to "my" 80's music on VEVO, I noticed a music video premiere featuring these two strangely dressed dudes. On a lark, I decided to listen to see what kind of sorry music these guys were making. From the very first song I listened to, DNA, I was hooked. These guys make music that is reminiscent of late David Bowie, The Cure, Howard Jones, Depeche Mode, Erasure, and such.
Luke Steele, the lead vocalist, has such a range in his voice it's amazing. I find that a lot of musicians make music where each song has the same tempo, vocal sound, similar lyrics from song to song. Not so with Empire of the Sun; every song is fresh and sounds enough different from the last song that you can listen to the entire CD over and over again and think that you're listening to a mixer.
This CD is amazing...buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Empire's got a grown up sound and it couldn't be better. It's a little bit mainstream, but the hooks are irresistible. Luke Steele's croonin' could tame lions.

You can literally listen to this album over and over and over again and not be bored. This is definitely my album of the summer.

After hearing the first single 'Alive', I was curious as to whether Ice on the Dune could hold up to Walking on a Dream. In many ways it has surpassed my expectations. I think this album is even more enjoyable and more consistent from start to finish than the previous one. DNA (one of my favorite songs on the album), sets a great tone that is carried throughout. Just an amazing and fun album that I can't stop listening to!
