Book Description

August 21, 1998
When Tristan Jones was discharged from the Navy, and told he was physically unfit for more seagoing, he got hold of a small craft, Cresswell, which he converted to a cruising ketch and started sailing. Determined to sail further north than anyone else, Jones set out for Iceland, accompanied only by his dog, Nelson. Jones spent two winters full of continuous suspense and danger in this bleak polar region.

Editorial Reviews

Review

...a classic tale ranking with the greatest seafaring adventures. -- Western Morning News, August 1996

...one of the classic sea tales of all times. -- Sailing Inland & Offshore, April 1996

Another magnificent tale of derring-do from the indomitable Welsh adventurer....As one critic put it: 'Ice! is to the wide waters of the world what the exploits of that other Jones chap, Indiana, is to the wide screen...only for real! -- Yachting World, 1996

His tales are richly illuminated with nautical history, explanations of the role of craft as diverse as the Norwegian knarr and the Eskimo umiak. "I had always been conscious that I was a direct link between the past centuries of sail-in-trade and the future, when sail will come into its own again. I can't wait for the oil wells to run dry," he wrote.

We can only hope that when the oil wells do run dry there will be someone who has Tristan Jones' wit, wisdom and the skill to convey both to future generations of readers of salty stories. -- Classic Boat, February 1996

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this one first and your hooked!!!, September 3, 1999
By

This review is from: Ice! (Paperback)
While this is not the first of Tristan's books, it should be the first one that you read. It really is the story that starts it all. When a close friend, Capt N., introduced me to Tristan, this was the book he gave me. I will never be able to thank him enough. From the very start, he grabs you, takes you hostage, and throws you down below. With you as a involved observer and Nelson, his one eyed three legged dog, Tristan Jones will fill you and chill you with his voyage to THE ARTIC!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Very Best of Tristan Jones Many Great Books, May 8, 1999
This review is from: Ice! (Paperback)
I have every single book of Tristan's, and Ice! has always been my favorite. Incredible description of the land and sea and emotions of his experiences in the far north years and years ago. His strength and courage (and humour!) have helped and inspired me most of my adult life. Though Tristan passed away four years ago I always remember him on this date, May 8, his birthday. Happy birthday, Tristan Jones!
