4.0 out of 5 stars Good death metal album
Ok, what we have here is a melodic death metal album, some might not even, because of the guitars not even catagorise them death, but their vocals point out clearly that it is death metal, and I've seen them live twice now, and they're definately death.
Now on to the music, it's an album with quit some speed in it, but not it's pretty melodic so never really gets...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good death/black metal but lacks true skill
Imortal souls is said to be a cross between inflames and children of bodom and I can say that is true. But where are the solo's and complicated guitar work ? Seems like it is non-existent in most songs. But all over this is a good metal all the less.

Now on to the music, it's an album with quit some speed in it, but not it's pretty melodic so never really gets brutal, though you can headbang good to it ;-) Almost all the songs are pure higher range death metal vocals, with two songs that have SOME clean vocals. Some of their songs are just nice, some are pretty emotional, but never becoming really exilent, but very nice to listen to none the less.
All in all four stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall a good melodic death album, February 16, 2005

First of all while Immortal Souls are described as being a cross between In Flames and Children of Bodom, they aren't nearly as good as either of those two bands. My main complaint with the cd in my opinion, is that the vocals sound terrible. For some reason they just don't fit in very well with the instruments and they sound too raspy and not forcefull enough. The instruments all sound really good on here with the guitars standing out the most. Another problem I had with this cd is that the whole "wintermetal" gets old rather quickly. Overall this is a good cd thats worth adding to your collection and hopefully Immortal Souls will continue to grow into their sound a bit more for their next release.

4.0 out of 5 stars coldest thrash metal around, March 10, 2004

I usually describe these guys as "Children of Bodom without keyboards." But really, that doesn't do it justice; no such comparison ever does, and it should be used only as an introductory point. Hovering somewhere around the thrash metal / melodic death metal neighborhood, these young musicians all show skill here, but it is in the interplay of guitars that the true beauty shines through. Several songs are instant classics, particularly "Welcome to North" and "Sacrifice." Lyrically, they are still praising the holy northern frost and its creator. I'm still a little undecided on the use of clean vocals on some of the later tracks, but I find myself singing along, so I guess it's okay with me. The production is a little warmer on this album than it was on "Under the Northern Sky", which is slightly better than this album (in particular, I prefer "Northern Sky's" drum production). But, it will still frost over your CD player. These Finnish youths show a lot of promise, and so far they are living up to it. Best of luck to them in all future endeavors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blizzard-Like, November 13, 2007

Immortal Souls first got my attention with the track "Snow Soul" on a shared disc with relative has-beens Mordecai. Luckily, Immortal Souls have stayed the course and come out with some nasty, blasting and intense melodic death metal.

"Ice Upon The Night" continues in their well-established style of rapid tempo, intense guitars and wildly monstrous grind vocals. The musicianship is excellent as all members play well together on this CD. The recording is well mastered, showing none of the unrefined quality of Immortal Souls' demo tracks. This is a very polished product, and one that any fan would be happy with.

The vocals on this CD are snarling, nasty, aggressive and sound like he has swallowed a gallon of pure ethanol and set it alight. Raging and merciless, the vocals maintain a relatively high tone, almost thrash-like, but with the intensity and energy of the best in death. There are some clean vocals on the CD and these are very well executed, blending well with the grind on two of the tracks.

The winter themes are still there, along with the hard, in-your-face stance the band takes with regard to their beliefs. However, the imagery is both artistic and accessible. I think the band has achieved a good balance, without allowing the art of it to cloud the message.

All in all, "Ice Upon The Night" is an excellent offering from Immortal Souls, and they still rank as one of my favourite bands of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Album!!, November 22, 2006
This review is from: Ice Upon the Night (Audio CD)
Although, it can be argued that Immortal Souls, draws a heavy influence from Children of Bodom, and Dark Tranquility, they have been able to incorporate the elements of these bands and deliver a sound of their own. While not as complex in terms of songwiting as the aforementioned bands, the music is straightforward and in your face, with more than decent guitar solos and riffs. This band stands on their own feet. Definitively recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Band, May 31, 2006
This review is from: Ice Upon the Night (Audio CD)
This band is with no doubt good, not the best but good. the instrumental parts of this album do sound much like Children of Bodom. but i dont see where anyone could get In Flames from this. In my opinion this vocals are more like Zao.

Anyways, this band is worth your time if your a fan of bands like Zao.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gothenberg Metal at it's finest, March 12, 2004
By
This review is from: Ice Upon the Night (Audio CD)
Immortal Souls is easily one of the best metal bands of all time. They are commonly referred to as black metal or meliodic death metal, but that is not the case here. They are a Gothenberg Metal. They are so sweet, every sing song is amazing! If you have any clue or any taste, you will buy this CD right now, or be left behind by one of the finest metal bands of our time. The beautiful melodies carry each track and each track delivers. Everwinter is absolutely incredible and so is sacrifice. those two songs you can checkout at facedown records website. Definately a must buy!

I'd Say this C.D. sounds more like a combination of Finntroll and Kalmah, But whatever. Still, truly awesome.
