Count the number of sprockets (gears) on the back wheel of your bike. Then order the chain that matches the number of sprockets. For example, I have 7 sprockets, so I ordered a 6/7/8 chain. If the chain you order lists between 7 and 10, this is your tool.

The tool should match the chain, not the number of sprockets you counted. For example, if you counted 6, and ordered a 6/7/8 chain, this tool will work with that chain because the chain fits a bike with 7 sprockets and this is a 7-10 tool. The fact that you have 6 sprockets isn't a problem, as long as you don't order a 5/6 chain.

Worked perfectly and easily and will last forever. I just used it. Highest recommendation.

Got it in the mail the same day as my new chain. Put my new chain on in no time flat. Took it with me on my next ride and used it to shorten the chain on the trail without holding my group up. It pushed out the pins when I turned it and didn't break. What more do you want from your chain tool.

This was relatively low priced, easy to use, and appear to be well made. I've only used it to remove the bike chain so far and it worked without a glitch. I would expect it would function just as well when I'm ready to install the new replacement chain. (Bike was stripped down for thorough restoration...rust removal, repaint of frame, cleaning and re-greasing all bearings and moving parts.)
I am upgrading my rating to 5 stars on the basis that I had withheld the 5th star only because I had not begun to use the tool to install the new chain yet. Upon installing the new chain, I discovered the chain only used a link plate and clip. Without needing to use the tool to install the chain, the tool is considered functional without a glitch, and in fact was easy to use. I completely recommend its purchase without hesitation.

I had to shorten a few new chains that was used to replace a several old chains. Also used to break an old factory chain that did not have a master link.

Worked on old 6 and 7 chains perfectly. Easy to insert chain, easy to use, removed chain pins easily. Very happy with this tool. Well made and solid.

This tool worked perfectly removing and replacing the chain on my bike. It is heavy enough to get the job done but not a monster. And the price is great, too. I thought I might have to settle for a poorly made tool at this price...but I was wrong. It's really a great bargain.

I bought this to change out the chain on my bike. It worked just how I expected, I have used it twice with no problems at all, doesn't appear to have taken any wear either.

I had never replaced a bicycle chain. I knew from internet research I would need a chain tool to remove the replacement chain's unneeded links as well as join the master link. This tool is for Shimano HG/IG/UG chains [definitely do research so you get the correct replacement chain for your bicycle.] First time user, first time success. The cost of the chain and this tool combined was less than the charge my local bicycle shop wanted to do the job. A plus: Now I now I can replace a chain!
