2.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best
The author can't make her mind up about her characters and the pace of the book is painfully slow. A lot of verbiage to sift through for very little reward.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entrancing Read, May 26, 2006
This review is from: Icebergs: A Novel (Hardcover)
I picked up "Icebergs" after hearing the writer read from her book on a local radio show. I bought the book on a Friday afternoon, and read it straight through the weekend, ignoring my husband and my children in my urgency to finish it. This is a wonderful book--filled with tangible imagery and compelling, tension building scenes. I found myself yearning for the characters happiness, and wondering if their dreams will be fulfilled--will Dottie and Walt find the bliss they deserve, will Caroline see how worthy she is of love, will the final scenes provide fulfillment of everyone's desires and requirements? I learned so much about the characters through Ms. Johns' tender portrayals, and the heartbreaking events that impacted their lives. I urge anyone to read "Icebergs"--it is a book that echoes long after you put it down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Belongs at the top of Oprah's bookclub list!, May 1, 2006

This review is from: Icebergs: A Novel (Hardcover)
I usually read mystery/thriller, but something about the cover of this book peaked my interest and I thought I would give it a try. Best decision I have made in a long time. Plan on staying up and reading until you finish this one. The characters become real, and close to your heart. Romance, sorrow, suspense, humor. It is all here. I can't wait until Rebecca Johns writes her next book. I will buy it on her name alone. I am already a true fan!

I couldn't put this book down. It has an exciting beginning and the characters are so deep that I was dying to find out what happened to all of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book this year!, August 13, 2006
This review is from: Icebergs: A Novel (Hardcover)
What a book. I loved this book. My favorite character was Dottie. I loved reading about the past and the present and everything in between. What secrets does each generation hold? I felt as if I was there, when Walt was waiting for the night to pass after crashing, and years later when she is standing in front of what she assumes is Bobby's home. This book reminds us life doesn't always turn out pretty, but can be what you want it to be. Also I think it leaves you wondering what if you had taken this path vs path B?

Ms. Johns is sure to be a top 10 author of all time. Her descriptions and imaginery is stellar. I couldn't recommend her enough. There was a bit left here and there to leave me wanting for me, but enough said to satisfy the curiosity. This book will be at the top of the bestseller list in no time! Don't delay, go order it today!

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Miss This Book!, August 11, 2006
This review is from: Icebergs: A Novel (Hardcover)
This is not the type of book that I normally read, so I started Icebergs with some apprehension. What a mistake it would have been to walk past this gem at the bookstore!! Icebergs is a wonderful, can't-put-it-down-once-you-start-it read. Ms. Johns' vivid descriptions transport the reader to another time and place and make you fall in love with the characters as you get to know them intimately. A gifted storyteller, I can't wait for her follow-up novel.

This is a great read, but wy is the Kindle price so expensive when you can get the book for 0.99cents? I would love to download it on my KIndle but the price is too high. I will stick with the paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars DON'T MISS THIS AWESOME BOOK!!!!!, February 11, 2010

ICEBERGS

I found this book stashed away in my book case. Huh? When did I get this I asked myself? I started flipping through the pages and before I knew it I was hooked and reading like a mad woman!

We meet Walt Dunmore, an air gunner during WWII. His missions generally take him over the barren, desolate, uninhabited, ice and snow terrain of Labrador. Walt and his best friend, Alister Clark, find themselves in a horrible and pretty much hopeless situation, making some pretty heavy promises and sharing secrets with each other.

After being discharged from the service, Walt returns home and marries Dottie. They befriend Alister's wife and daughter and they all become a family of sorts. Adele, Alister's wife, becomes very dependent on Walt and Dottie. Adele is not the best of mothers as she is so wrapped up in her own issues and problems. Therefore, Adele's daughter, Caroline, turns to Dottie and Walt for most everything in her life. Dottie becomes more of a mother to Caroline than Adele.

Time moves on and we travel through the lives of Walt and Dottie, their sons, Charley and Sam, along with Caroline and Adele, and a host of other characters. We laugh and cry with them, the circumstances that happen to each of them and how entwined their lives are and always will be.

We are taken through history, as the story line takes us through time between WWII and the Vietnam era. We are with the well thought out characters and experience their loves, losses, happiness, and the ups and downs of their every day life.

This book contains suspense, humor, a little bit of mystery, and many factors of the human condition. Don't miss out on this book, as it is an excellent and wonderful journey through the lives of many well fleshed out characters.

Rebecca Johns has another book being released in October, 2010, THE COUNTESS. It is already on my wish list.

This book is highly recommended. Great reading, wonderful and real characters, great plot. Don't miss it!

Thank you!

Pam

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable, August 30, 2006
This review is from: Icebergs: A Novel (Hardcover)
'Icebergs' is an excellent and compelling read. The author delves into the thoughts and motivations of the main characters, giving the reader a unique perspective on their intertwining lives. In spanning generations, this novel explores how decisions and events (whether planned or unplanned) have the potential to effect ordinary people in extreme ways, sometimes changing the course of things to come. This is the type of book that you won't want to rush through as the story evolves and unfolds. I found the narrative to be fluid and perfectly paced, from beginning to end. I didn't really want it to end.
