Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

One might easily say, "Oh no, not another round the world race story!" However, this is an extraordinary tale. In a lively and engaging fashion, Jourdane relates his experiences on a Kiwi ketch in the 1989-90, 33,000-mile Whitbread yacht race. At 45, he is the oldest member of the crew and the only American. Jourdane details how he came to respect his Kiwi crewmates and rival competitors. He includes an adequate but not overpowering amount of technical detail (for which there is a good glossary) as well as descriptions of all the boats which participated. This exceptional account is recommended for most sailing collections.

This review is from: Icebergs, Port and Starboard: The Whitbread Round the World Race (Paperback)
If there's even an ounce of salt water in your blood, Jourdanes inside look at the grueling Whitbread Round the World Race will make your heart beat faster and your spine tingle. I started reading the book one evening, and found that I couldn't put it down until I finished it in the wee hours of the morning. Chris Caswell Senior Editor, Yachting Magazine
