It has an exceptionally tight, form-fitting cut perhaps most flattering for those with a trim, athletic build.

I bought one of these to use as an outer layer in transition seasons (fall, spring, ect). Unfortunately, the fit is funny. It is definitely meant to be more of a mid-layer than an outer layer. I confirmed this when I talked with the Icebreaker reps. The fit is meant to be tight against the body and not looser as an outer layer would to be layered underneath. The fabric was great and soft on the inside. But I had to return it as it was not what I thought it was.

I use this jacket for layering outdoors and for staying warm in a cold office. It has an exceptionally tight, form-fitting cut perhaps most flattering for those with a trim, athletic build. The Monsoon color comes with a red stripe/collar that contrasts with and enlivens the fine, gray/blue knit. The jacket is supremely comfortable: warm (more than polyester fleece for the same weight), soft, and stretchy. The jacket has two zippered exterior hand pockets, one zippered exterior pocket for a phone or camera, and two large inner pockets. But I doubt these pockets, especially the large inner pockets, will find much use as it would contradict the whole purpose of looking good -- rather like stuffing a spandex top with pillows. All zippers thread easily and/or work reliably. The sleeves are approximately two inches longer than necessary at the inner wrist and three inches longer than necessary at the back of the hand -- perhaps done intentionally to maximize hand protection when cold (one could quite comfortably pull one's hands up into the sleeves)? A quality product with an air of luxury. Overall I use this jacket as a sporty, handsome, style statement for around town rather than a workhorse jacket for getting muddy and torn, perhaps somewhat analogous to a suburbanite wielding a heavy duty 4WD truck.

The key feature of this jacket is that it is made of wool. If you are opposed to fleece or afraid of being struck by lightning, then it is the way to go.

That said, here are some observations:

Fit: The sleeves are extra long (like in the photo), and it has a bit of a tail. This would make it good for cycling, except that you will still want a windbreaker; this jacket is not wind resistant. The longer sleeves are appreciated outside on a cold day, but otherwise a bit annoying. Otherwise the fit seems within the range of expectation for small and medium; neither a size up or down.

Fabric: Soft, smooth, breathable. This is not some scratchy wool. You would hardly know that it is wool.

Appearance: Looks like fitness apparel. Not a good look for casual wear, especially because of the design of the back of the jacket (which has A-shirt like appearance) and longer sleeves.

Warmth: I'm not convinced that it is warmer than or as warm as fleece.

Other: NZ wool, but made in China.

Overall: I still like my fleece.

It's soft, warm, comfortable from the beginning, and it stays that way during use. I have a Patagonia down sweater jacket, w/850 fill I believe. It's nice too, but only if your standing around, or not exerting yourself. Once you begin any rigorous activity, you quickly get hot/overheated & perspire, which turns my down jacket into a damp/wet/sticky/slimy thing I wish I could be out of quickly... but I'm usually stuck wearing it, as it's too cold to take it off. Now that I've discovered the magic/comfort of Merino Wool, I won't be wearing my down jacket any time soon. It's blown away my previous opinions of wool, as being scratchy, itchy, and uncomfortable. It keeps me comfortable before, during, & after activities. It seems to help regulate my body temperature to some extent. Don't get me wrong, you can get hot wearing it during activities, and you can/will sweat in it, but my comfort range is considerably larger in this jacket. When you do sweat it in, it's not too uncomfortable, especially compared to my down jacket. It also seems to dry out fairly quickly, and does not get smelly, or crunchy/stiff, like my down jacket. I've been wearing my Icebreaker every day since I've got it, and I love it. The fit is fitted, not baggy/bulky, which is a good thing, if you're using it for a mid layer, as I am. I chose the XL, as I'm ~6'1, & about 220. I tried on the XXL in their Touch Lab, but it was too big, and it did not fit me well. I always wear my XL Arcteryx shell over the top, so the fit of the Icebreaker works well inside my shell. The Icebreaker has plenty give/elasticity, with no binding or restricted movements. After wearing it for a about a week, the jacket fit me even better, as it gave some around my upper arms, where it was slightly snug.Read more ›
