3.0 out of 5 stars Just another RPG
I like the game, but to me there is nothing that really stands out about it. It does follow D&D rules pretty good, even with the attacks and rolls to save and etc. The graphics are average. One thing that gets me is the fact that I feel like I go back and forth back and forth. My girlfriend walked in the other day and said, "I see you play this game a lot and it always...

5.0 out of 5 stars Baldur's Gate to Icewind Dale, February 7, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Icewind Dale: The Collection (DVD-ROM)
Well, I bought this thinking it would be another Baldur's Gate which was fun for me, but the pace of BG was a bit slow. I was surprised to find out that Icewind Dale let you kick more arse and level up much higher than BG. Also the New spells and multitude of weapons was awesome. The missions were designed well, and the graphics are astounding. If you like D&D rules, and if you're in the mood for a great tactical combat RPG with high levelling, this game is for you. Also, this game runs on most computers, even with low quality hardware (like mine) which I thought was a plus. The expansion is also included in the collection, which I thought was a really good deal. Lots of enemies = lots of fun. Definately a great game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Runs in Windows 7 64 bit, August 12, 2011

I repurchased this game awhile back, before I upgraded my machine, and I was bored so I installed Icewind Dale I,HOW,II. It runs beautifully without a glitch. So if you have been kicking around the idea of buying it and were not sure it would run, well buy it. Not much to say about the game itself (love it)and so many battles. I'm pausing the game so I can rest. Its a hack and slay from hell.

4.0 out of 5 stars Icewind Dale Series, January 25, 2011

Icewind Dale ("ID") is somewhat unique in the Infinity engine games as it focuses on combat over storyline. In the BG series, you find yourselves doing more "adventuring", going from zone to zone hoping you find something to fight that is level relevant.

ID is linear, and action packed, meaning you never go more than a few minutes without a fight. There is sufficient story to make this feel like a real DnD game though. For the price, any DnD enthusiast probably needs to consider this game a must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars A COLLECTION OF GEMS - SOME RAW, SOME POLLISHED, July 27, 2009

I have a confession to make: when the first ICEWIND DALE came out I bought maybe the first copy and rushed home to immerse into it. I had just polished off the excellent BALDUR's GATE and the incomparable PLANESCAPE: TORMENT. A day into ICEWIND DALE and I absolutely hated it!

The graphics were comparable (all three games share the same engine) and the gameplay was almost identical. The music was excellent and certain tunes stayed with me ever since. The storyline was nothing to complain about - after all, any story set in "the spine of the world" can hardly go wrong! What I did not appreciate was the rushed feeling of a job on an impossible deadline.

In order to prolong the duration of the game, much smaller maps were stuffed with a far greater number of powerful foes - and almost nothing could be solved without combat. As a result, what was expected to be an enjoyable experience turned into a chore of endless autopausing, retargeting and constant battling.

Having said the above, I must admit that, in hindsight, my complains seem trivial. Little did I know at the time how far into hell greed would drive the gaming industry. Compared to 3-4 hour games, extra charges for essential content, Limited Installations and RootKits (of the likes of StarFORCE and SecuROM), well, games such as the ICEWIND DALE saga stand out as landmarks in PC-gaming history.

The expansion (THE HEART OF WINTER) improved things somewhat but the series did not find its stride until the very good ICEWIND DALE II. I remember spending endless hours with the sequel and can compare it to the original BALDUR's GATE.

RECOMMENDED.

One thing that gets me is the fact that I feel like I go back and forth back and forth. My girlfriend walked in the other day and said, "I see you play this game a lot and it always looks like you are doing the same exact thing." That would be going back to town all the time. BUT, that is just my experience and I'm only partially through the game. Good story line and stories behind the weapons and seperate quests. But for the most part I find the game to be boring.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, considering how old it is..., August 3, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Icewind Dale: The Collection (DVD-ROM)
I just recently bought this collection, although I already had the regular game. The reason I did this is that the Heart of Winter Extension is not available by itself anymore. The price still makes it a good deal.

This game is of course quite old already, and one can def. tell, although for its time, this was an amazing game. I still enjoyed playing it even today.

One of my criticisms of the original game is also true for this collection: There are no printed manuals. Even the advertised strategy guide is only included as a PDF file. I guess for 10 bucks, that's OK, but still...

Note that the extension (Heart of Winter) game is a bit on the tough side, especially if you intend to use your original party from the main game. The Extension is def. much harder than the original game was.

Thanks for the great computer game for my son!! He wanted to get this game again, as his was lost. I tried to get it for him by special order at another place but it never came forth. We also looked in various stores over the weeks but could not find it. Finally, I remembered that I often can get things off Amazon! So I looked, and there was your great Icewind Dale collection! Thanks so much for a good product with a great price for a new item!! It was packed well and arrived in a timely manner. Best wishes!!
