Editorial Reviews

Born in Flanders, Heinrich Isaac spent his career between the Medici court in Florence and the
court of Emperor Maximilian I in Vienna and Innsbruck. An heir to the Franco-Flemish tradition,
who was then dazzled by the Italian Renaissance, he was one of the first European composers
of the 16th century. His songs are highly varied in character, ranging from the most distraught
expressions of grief to joyous Carnival revelry.

Let's tell it like it is! This is the first completely satisfactory and satisfying recording of the music of Heinrich Isaac (1450-1517) I've ever heard! And since Isaac has been one of my favorite "renaissance" composers since the 1960s, I've heard most of the others. I'll mention later a few other CDs that are close; the failures of the majority of Isaac performances are both in interpretation and in musicianship. Large somber choirs just can't sing the rhythmic phrases of Isaac's polyphony with enough verve. That's in addition to the inevitably murky sound quality of recordings of multiple-voices-on-a-part.

Capella Flamenca (Flemish Capella), for this performance, features just four male voices: bass Dirk Snellings, baritone Lieven Termont, tenor Tore Denys, and countertenor Marnix de Cat. The vibrancy and balance of their four voices is more than enough; there's no thinness or reediness about this quartet. The ensemble also includes lutenist Jan Van Outryve, recorderist Patrick Denecker, and gambists Liam Fennelly, Thomas Baeté and Piet Strykers. A second ensemble shares the CD: Oltremontano, with cornettist Doron Sherwin and trombonists Adam Bregman, harry Ries, and Wim Becu. Don't expect the hear all the voices and instruments en masse! Chiefly they alternate on tracks. Whatever ambiguous historical justification there might be for massing voices and instruments, nobody who knows this music well will argue against the fact that it records best when performed OVPP or OIPP by topnotch performers like those of Capilla Flamenca and Oltremontano.

Isaac was one of the great masters of the "tenor song" - a form especially popular in German lands - in which a strophic poem is sung as the tenor/cantus-firmus while instruments provide the outer parts in elaborate polyphony.

Well done. I would have liked a greater selection of choral music. Booklet, recording quality and notes - excellent.
