Great nonfiction book on insects and arachnids,

This review is from: The Icky Bug Alphabet Book (Jerry Pallotta's Alphabet Books) (Paperback)
This book was fantastic. It had a great deal of interesting information about 26 different bugs. The text was still simple enough for children of all ages to enjoy. My preschoolers loved it!

I bought this book for my son for his 4th birthday (he helped pick it out) and it is one of his favorite books. He has had it less than 6 months and can tell you what every bug is and something about it. If you have a bug lover its a great book.

This beautifully illustrated book introduces young children to the wonderful world of insects. I read it to my girls from a very young age and at age two they could identify pretty much every insect in there. They enjoy looking for bugs in their garden too. Children will enjoy the short descriptive text. The illustrations really make this book a delight.

When I saw this title on my son's summer reading list last year, I braced myself for a syrupy simple ABC book with bugs in it. B. BEE! BUZZZZ! This is so much better than that. For one thing, the illustrations are finely rendered, making each bug beautiful and fascinating and each page worth lingering over. For another, the text is both simple enough for a young reader to parse on his own and interesting enough to engage an adult reading aloud.More importantly, it actually teaches something about each of the bugs discussed. This book is on my gift list for all of the young children in my life. It's a lovely alphabet book that will grow with the child.

The market is saturated with books that appeal to girls, so I'm glad to see that a series has been written about something little boys are usually drawn to. Not to say it's not for girls -- it can alleviate the fear of bugs, plus we need to nurture their interest in science.Anyway, I recommend this entire series in my latest parenting book, "Kindergarten Simplified," based on my experience with children preparing for school.

My 5 year old granddaughter loves looking for and learning about bugs. I thought I'd get this book for her. She loved it. It was appropriate for her age. She read it over and over and happily shared it with family and friends.

This book series is written by Jerry Pallotta. Although the pictures are drawn by several illustrators, they are the best illustrations I have ever encountered. The series is super. I initially purchased The Icky Bug Counting Book and I was hooked. I bought it for use in reading in the content area. I now own almost all the series--The Icky Bug Counting Book, The Icky Bug Alphabet Book, The Icky Bug Shapes Book and The Icky Bug Color Book. I hope to complete my collection this summer. Excellent content area books. I purcased the books in both hardcover and softcover. Purchase them in hardcover because you will use them over and over again--durability. If you can afford to purchase at least two copies. One for the class library and one for your use. They will be the most popular books on the self--guaranteed.

This was my favorite alphabet book when I was a child. It was so interesting! It talks about familiar bugs, and some you may not have seen before. I highly recommend it. I haven't seen this book for 20 years, and I still think its great. Don't think its just for boys either! I am sure this had some small contribution to the fact that I am now starting Graduate Studies in Aquatic Entomology.

My grandson is 3 and very curious. I keep toys at my house for him to enjoy when he visits. One of his favorites for which he always asks is a collection of plastic 2-3inch insects. We always have lots to talk about when the insects come out. So The Icky Bug Book along with a magnifying glass was a perfect addition to our collection of insects. Lots of fun!

Beautifully Illustrated Board Book,
This review is from: The Icky Bug Alphabet book (Hardcover)
"The Icky Bug Alphabet Book" is a beautifully illustrated, well written work for all ages. I was particularly pleased to find it in board book form since my grandson is just a toddler. Unlike most children's board books, the illustrations in this one are very detailed and beautifully done. They are realistic, instead of being stylized or shown as simple line drawings. The text is interesting and does not "talk down" to the reader or listener; parents will enjoy reading this as much as children will enjoy being read to. Further, the information in the book is instructive, and children will learn not only to identify different insects, but will also learn information about each one.If you want to go beyond the fun books which are so important when you are trying to impart a love of reading to your child, I definitely recommend this book. |
