5.0 out of 5 stars Great insurance policy
I purchased this radio for a recent vacation boating on Lake Powell. I wanted the radio for emergency communications and weather monitoring.
The weather monitoring came in crystal clear and was necessary since we were in the middle of the Arizona monsoon season. Fortunately I never needed the radio for emergency reasons, but it gave me peace of mind having it...

Ordered April 19th. Ship date keeps getting moved back. Would really like to have the VHF as boating season is here!

The unit is solid and well built. I chose Icom due to my experience as a Radioman in the US Navy. If it's good enough for the Navy, it's good enough for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars I like it!, July 2, 2007

Excellent product! Icom makes superior products.

The battery has a shorter lifespan because it needs to be lighter in order for the unit to float.

Most people, myself included, would not even notice the difference. It still holds a couple days charge even if you use constantly.

If you need a hand held VHF, I would highly recommend this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid VHF. Worth buying a floating one., November 1, 2009

This review is from: Icom IC-M34 VHF Waterproof Marine Two-Way Radio (Electronics)
I've been doing a lot of sailing for the last 12 years or so. This is my second VHF, my first one fell into the Potomac River never to be seen again (at least by me). This VHF is easy to use, easy to charge, and, hey, it floats! So maybe it'll last me longer than the first one.

It probably has some features that I won't use. Honestly what more do you need more than being able to get the weather all the commercial and non-commercial channels, and being able to change from low to high on the wattage? I guess I have used the international vs domestic bands in a couple locations, but I think I've forgotten how to use the scan and what the tag and moni buttons do. (Maybe I should get out the manual. : ) This one is sturdy and reliable, and handy to have around.

Battery life is good. I do a lot of day sailing and it's always been good for that. I've taken it on some week long charters, and I think it may have needed to get charged up once. There are always a lot of hard-installed VHF's on charter boats, so you wont have to use a hand held too often. Though I'm often on boats that have a permanently installed VHF, it's nice to have the hand held for communicating when your on deck or listening to the weather as you enjoy the view.

This is a good one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great radio 5stars, poor seller 0stars, March 15, 2009
Love the radio, solid, does what is needed, not a toy. Yet item was sent with a 220v charger, we're 110-120v in the states, and seller, homestoregalore, did not respond after numerous attempt even through engaging Amazon. So I had to but a separate converter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great VHF Handheld, December 12, 2007

I purchased this radio for my shore party to communicate with my boat while on a sailing trip in Belize. It worked flawlessly. I only wish that it came standard with the optional AAA battery tray. I live in Houston and with all of the dealers available to me, none kept this accessory in stock, and I was forced to leave on my trip with the charger packed in my sail bag.

The Icom IC-M34 VHF Marine Transceiver is easy to use, and more importantly operating out of a kayak, it floats. The reception is great, as is the speaker. I highly recommend this radio to anyone who will be working on the water.

This ICOM VHF marine radio was used during a week-long kayak trip on Lake Superior this past August. We had a healthy dose of wind, waves, and changing conditions, and this radio provided timely weather info (thanks to Environment Canada) and a strong, loud signal. Thankfully, we did not need to MAYDAY out using the tranceiver, so I can't comment on that piece of it...

5.0 out of 5 stars My husband loves this radio, July 17, 2008

I bought it as an anniversary gift to help keep him safe out on the water and he loves it. The fact that it floats rather than sinks was the key reason I selected this radio- in rough water or in an emergency, a radio that sinks to the bottom if accidentally dropped is useless. Knowing he has this radio on the boat gives me peace of mind when he's out alone on that water.
