Editorial Reviews

The late Donna Summer was appropriately crowned 'The Queen of Disco' decades ago at the height of the boom that helped to truly make her an icon. And being recognized as such, she will be inducted posthumously into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during its 2013 ceremonies. Worldwide adulation had resulted after a musical/theatrical role took her to Germany, which led her to record with producer Giorgio Moroder and his collaborator, Pete Bellotte, is a Hollywood story in its own right.
The success of the rather provocative 'Love to Love You Baby' set people on their heels and began an amazing streak of pop and disco hits for that team.
The hits kept coming from 'Hot Stuff' to 'Bad Girls' to the anthem 'She Works Hard for the Money'-and they're all included in this Icon collection.

I bought this compilation for only one reason - I am a huge Donna Summer fan - and forever will be. There have been more comprehensive Donna compilations out there (The Journey, Gold, Anthology and Greatest Hits of the Disco Queen which I thought was a genuine compilation but learned later that it was a bootleg) and Icon happens to have only 11 selections composed of 10 of Donna's definitive hits from the 70s and 1 from the 80s. The best thing about this compilation is the remastered sound which makes her classic songs sound current and fresh as ever. Except for Hot Stuff and Bad Girls which are album versions and MacArthur Park which is the 6:24 version, all the other songs are single versions (She Works Hard, On The Radio, Love To Love, I Feel Love, Heaven Knows, Dim all the Lights, Could it be Magic & Last Dance). The price ($5.99) is also not bad. The cover was taken from Donna's Bad Girls photo sessions in 1979 when she was at the peak of her career and beauty. The back cover was taken from her On The Radio photo sessions also in 1979. Icon is yet another Donna compilation which showcases 11 of her definitive songs which have become modern day classics. I am very proud that Donna Summer was finally inducted to the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame in 2013. Her induction may have been belated and could have been realized when Donna was still around to personally accept the honor. Well, whether Donna was inducted to the Hall Of Fame or not, the most important thing is that during her lifetime, she made her mark in the music industry as the Queen of Disco who later proved her range and versatility by singing other genres. Donna was highly respected and genuinely appreciated by her peers for her talent as a musical artist and to her millions of fans around the world, she will always be our Iconic Diva because her timeless music will live on in our hearts and in dance floors forever.

Hard to believe, it has been nearly one year since Donna Summer tragically lost her life to cancer, which in so many ways has been overshadowed in favor of other artists who've passed on young. Her life will always be remembered as one of the most influential artists to have ever come out of the Disco music era. Sadly, her passing was overshadowed over other great performers from Dick Clark, Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, and the biggest shocker, Whitney Houston. But Donna remained very true to her voice and her heart. That has shown even after the last dance had faded. Now with her posthumously going into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, after being treated badly and overlooked for over a decade, she is going in, and a new collection of her hits is being released to celebrate her induction.

Icon: Donna Summer is a reflection of her biggest hits from the Disco era from the 70's to the early 80's with her biggest hits. The collection fairs mostly well as a starter for anyone that has never heard any of Donna's big songs before fairly well for hard core fans. The songs have been remastered well, and showcase a lot from Donna's voice from her seductive and sensual rhythms from I Feel Love, to the intimate Love To Love You Baby, all the way to her biggest hit from the 80's with She Works Hard For The Money. The collection cuts to the heart of the matter which are Donna's most-popular songs, which showcase her well for anyone that has never heard one of her songs before. Yet, the Icon album does overshadow a lot of Donna's classics as well from the 80's and beyond. Songs like This Time I Know Its For Real, Supernatural Love, and Unconditional Love with Musical Youth were overlooked from this collection.

Another G H collection but as always the Queen's music reigns supreme! This is great for the casual, radio fan of her best music!
