I'm always excited to see a new Janet release. "Icon" is an abbreviated collection of Janet's "Number Ones". It starts with "What Have You Done For Me Lately" and ends with "Nothing" (the beautiful ballad and theme song from Why Did I Get Married Too).
So many #1 hits included here! And lots of uptempo jams that Janet Jackson is known for. It's nice to have these hits on a one CD collection - and the price is certainly right! This should tide us over until we get a new studio album from Janet, hopefully in 2011!! Pick this one up...

There isn't much to say other than Janet always does it BIG!! I already own Number Ones and I purchased this CD just so I can have "Nothing" on disc. Janet has a crazy collection of #1 hits and this is a good selection. Some of her best work! Keep em coming Ms. Jackson! You've got die-hard fans waiting for more!! :)

Great price for a career-spanning collection of Janet songs,
This review is from: Icon: Janet Jackson (Audio CD)
This is a pretty good mix of old and newer songs for a very affordable price point! This collection totally brings back memories of my childhood. I can remember jamming to "What Have You Done For Me Lately" back in 1986 in the schoolyard. "Miss You Much" was ALL over the radio back in '89 - I tried so hard to learn the chair routine from her video! Doesn't everyone feel like going on an "Escapade" after a long work week? I know I do.
"That's The Way Love Goes" brought out Janet's sexy, loving side... 1993 was a HUGE year for Janet with her release (janet.) and showed the public the highs and lows of love. I can still remember to this day seeing her perform "That's The Way Love Goes" on the MTV VMAs. It was the Janet we all knew and loved, but UNLEASHED! Her hair was crazy! The very first time I heard "Together Again", I knew it was going to be a #1 hit. Such a great song to celebrate life. The summer of 2000 - "Doesn't Really Matter" was on the radio, taken from The Nutty Professor 2 soundtrack. Yet again, she delivered another stunning performance of this track at the MTV VMAs. The song "Make Me" just makes you want to get up and grove. I hope some of her upcoming music sounds like this! To end off the collection, we have "Nothing," taken from Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married Too" soundtrack. Written for the movie, the lyrics summarize the relationship issues covered in the film. It also gives us hope that love will conquer all. Great playlist of Janet's hits. Great Price.

Great collection of some of my favorite Janet songs,

Janet has achieved more number one songs than can fit on a single CD, so I don't know how they managed to choose the contents of Icon, but it's a great selection of some of my favorite Janet songs!
From the funky beats of 'What Have You Done For Me Lately' (brings me back to being blown away by Janet on the 1987 Grammys - Gimme A Beat!!!) & 'Nasty', through to Janet's recent hits 'Make Me' and 'Nothing it's a great journey through Janet's amazing artistry, and brings back so many great memories. 'Nothing' is fast becoming one of my favorite songs and it was only available on iTunes prior to this so it's great to have it on the album along with 'Make Me'. For fans it has a great selection of some of your favorite Janet songs including 'Make Me' and 'Nothing' together, and for the casual listener it has many Janet songs you will fondly remember from over the years. Icon is great music for home, at the office, for dancing of course... and I plan to make Icon a Christmas gift for a few friends along with Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too? (Widescreen Edition) Highly recommended!

Good to get TWO Janet songs not on previous albums,

As someone who collects all Janet's albums and singles, obviously I was going to buy "Number Ones" just to get the new recording Make Me, which was, sadly, not released as a CD single with the remixes included. But then I stumbled upon this single disc compilation that has all the hits I already have PLUS Make Me PLUS a song that was NOT on the Number Ones CD, Nothing, a track from a Tyler Perry movie. So rather than having to buy number ones and the Perry soundtrack, I got the two songs I needed on this one inexpensive single disc compilation.

An Abridged version of Janet's Number Ones double disc.,

The Icon series has done a fair job of dropping quickie best of collections into the ever decreasing CD market place, keeping artists in the shops desptie any new material to offer. Janet Jackson's "Number Ones" is no exceptions, culling a tightly wound eleven hits in quick succession, ignoring albums prior to the blockbuster "Control" and including one lesser heard recent song, "Nothing," from Tyler Perry's "Why Did I get Married Too?" movie. But the concentration is on those big moments when Janet took "Control" over her music and images, along with producers of the moment, ex-Prince associates Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. They take up 10 of the twelve songs here, and it's easy to recognize why. The Minneapolis Sound, which combined equal parts industrial slam/pulverizing beat/Janet's commanding studio presence to work dance floor monsters, worked perfectly on those breakthrough hits like "Control," "What Have You Done For Me Lately" or "Miss You Much." Songs that were effectively without melody, but drove home completely on Janet's forceful personality and the Jam/Lewis conquering beats. It didn't take Janet long to diversify even more, as she began to pitch more socially active songs onto the charts, like her AIDS anthem "Together Again" and the lovely ballad "That's The Way Love Goes." She was also giving props to idols like Joni Mitchell (sampling "Big Yellow taxi" on "Got Till It's Gone" or more curiously, America's "Ventura Highway" on "Someone to call My Lover"; sadly these tow tracks are not included). But Jackson, like her brother Michael, decided at a certain stage to trust her own instincts and become her own artist. Even in this admittedly slight collection, she proves that her vision was the right one to peruse. More interested fans should probably bump up to the two disc "Number Ones," but for me, this Icon set fills my space just fine. |
