It appears to me this is essentially a repackaging of the original "WAR- GREATEST HITS" with the addition of "SPILL THE WINE"..(LONG VERSION)...........and 'GALAXY( SINGLE VERSION) . it includes the 6.39 minute version of "summer" just like 'GREATEST HITS"..........bottom line is, you need to pick up the original albums to get the long version of most of the songs.........but in the meantime- i like this better than "BEST OF WAR AND MORE".............

This is classic War that fills the void in my collection. I had purchased later albums of War already, but wanted some of their older, first hits. This CD is an excellent compilation of War's early popular songs like "The Cisco Kid," "Southern Part of Texas," "Me And Baby Brother," (a Soul Train dance hit) and "Summer." Thank-you to the distributors for releasing this collection on CD.

War is the kind of Band who could do it all. broke down genres and did there thing period. classic songs, albums and you can appreciate what they did many, many, many years ago. they should have been put in the Rock and Roll of Fame easily before some corny head jive turkeys like the Beastie Boys as well and I agree with War where is the Musical Justice? when you hear these songs here, you can hear War's influence on so many latter day acts, etc.. very talented well rounded band. regardless of there circumnstances and what have you, the War name belongs in the Hall and acknowledged to the fullest.

WAR-THE HITS: Surprisingly, this is the first CD collection to gather up virtually every one of WAR's organic jazz-funk-rock hits on a single platter; previous efforts including THE BEST OF WAR AND MORE wrongly omitted stone classics like GYPSY MAN and THE WORLD IS A GHETTO in favor of filler. The 2010 release THE HITS unfurls eleven of their even dozen Top 40 singles, in blessed chronological order to boot; the lively instrumental BELLARO is the only missing hit. It's not easy to pick highlights from a band this consistent, but their spicy ERIC BURDON collaboration SPILL THE WINE, the reflective chant SLIPPIN' INTO DARKNESS, and the disco-laced final chart entry GALAXY are all powerful contenders. WAR was a democracy, with everyone sharing vocal and songwriting duties...PAPA DEE ALLEN's expressive percussion workouts, LEE OSKAR's slinky harmonica blasts and CHARLES MILLER's sublime woodwinds were but three important components of the band's unique rhythmic vibe. In leiu of the more comprehensive, but more expensive double disc set THE VERY BEST OF WAR, THE HITS is exactly what it says...which is all casual fans of this street-smart, celebratory ensemble will need to get their jam on.

RATING: FOUR JAM BANDS

I wouldn't have bought this if I knew what it was before I pulled the trigger. These are probably 45 versions. I was all ready to be wowed again by the intro into "Slipping into Darkness". It dropped me a minute or so into the song. The groove at the end of "The World is a Ghetto" is also chopped off. Buy the original albums (or digital versions of the albums) to hear what these songs were meant to sound like. Very disappointing. War laid down some of the finest grooves of all time. This is like buying the Reader's Digest version of the music. Don't waste your money.

With War you have to remember that they were two things: War was a “Platinum Jazz” group which fused together every available genre of the late 60’s and early 70’s into a gumbo of artistic freedom rarely seen from other contemporaries of the period. War was also a Billboard chart topping Soul/R&B act with all of these hit “singles”. As the title implies, The Hits is a compilation of the Singles (with the exception of Spill The Wine which is the only full length version on this disc), and since the CD does not indicate the track times at all, neither on the back list nor inside the skimpy insert, one will not know this until after purchase. It IS rather disappointing to not get the full length versions of Slippin Into Darkness, The World Is A Ghetto, and Gypsy Man as these were my personal favorites among their jazzy funk jams. This is especially true when one realizes that the CD is barely 50 minutes long with near 29 minutes to spare for added length on tunes. I had all the original vinyl LP’s and reviving that set in CD would be costly (but to be sure I will work on it as time goes by) so if you are in my shoes, expect the worst and be happy with the singles for now.
For the unfamiliar contemplating this adventure in retro music, here is what to expect. Lyrically, as with many 70’s classic rock artists, the songs often take on a “socio-political” stance. The music has been called “laid-back California funk vibe” which does not mete out justice. They were funk-rock, jazz, latin-rock, rhythm’n blues, with a splash of Jamaica-Mon thrown in for good measure. They were a transcendental cross-racial multi-ethnic line-up from 4 continents surrounding the Atlantic ocean and the music appealed literally to everybody who had ears and two foot-tapping feet.
