I was reluctant to shell out the money to buy yet another TDN greatest hits CD, but I took a chance based on another review here at Amazon and the relatively low cost. I'm glad I did; simply put, this is the best sounding remaster of any TDN CD to date, including the '02 Japanese editions of "Three Dog Night" (aka "One") through "Naturally." Each of the 12 songs here sound better than they have on any previous CD issuance... whether on the hiss-filled 1990 MCA originals, to the 2004 "Complete Hit Singles." The only drawback here--the one that cost it a fifth star--is that we only get 12 of their 20-plus Top 40 hits. As much as I love these 12, I feel a bit cheated by not being able to hear this great treatment applied to "Out In The Country" and "Family Of Man" and the best TDN song not to appear on a single, "I'd Be So Happy." In a perfect world the whole TDN catalog would be remastered to this quality (like Rhino did with Chicago).... we've never heard "Harmony" through "Hard Labor" sound anywhere near this good. I'd be overjoyed just to have an "Icon Vol. II" that included all the missing hits. C'mon Geffen or Rhino or somebody, there's a market out here to be tapped, will you mine it?

I took a gamble on buying this budget reissue, but was surprised as I listened to Mike Jones' digital realization. These are not the album mixes we have all come to expect on a reissue! What a surprise to hear newly discovered guitar licks, heightened piano and organ accompaniment, and extended fade outs. Congratulations on a quality reissue. Listen to Shambala and hear it again for the first time.

This is an excellent low-budget overview of Three Dog Night's hits. The sound quality is very good and it includes 12 of their big hits from the 70's. That is the only problem with this release, it only includes 12 of their 21 Top 40 hits. While this is an excellent collection, I would recommend that you spend a few extra bucks and get their "Complete Hit Singles" CD instead. It includes all of their top 40 hits.

Back in the day, I heard 3 Dog Night perform live. Interestingly, their opening act, "The Turtles", sounded better live than did 3 Dog Night, at least on that occasion. My conclusion was; either 3 Dog Night were better studio musicians than live performers, or, they weren't having the best of nights. This CD has a lot of their classics & it's fun to re-visit this iconic group's work 40 years downstream. That said, the CD engineer didn't exhaust him/herself on the re-issue effort. While the audio quality of this CD is clean & clear, it lacks depth. On the other hand, since this purchase was part of an Amazon promotional deal, the CD cost me all of $8.00. In other words, it was money well spent.

UMG does a great job of selecting and remastering the songs on this compilation. This covers 12 of their 21 Top 40 hits (which all can be found on "The Complete Hit Singles") so it's basically a reissue of the 20th Century Masters collection of 3DN except that "Eli's Coming" and Shambala" basically swapped track positions. I decided to go with this collection because the remastering is the best on this compilation, I was able to get it for under $5 and I felt it covered their very best hits. I'll admit that it would have been nice to see "The Family of Man" on here considering that I have seen some budget compilations clock in longer than 40:02 and with more than 12 songs in the past but this will most certainly do the trick for anyone looking for a single disc 3DN compilation.
