Book Description

This book captures the generic information of practical significance for anyone functioning in an intensive care unit regardless of its medical or surgical environment. The Second Edition has been thoroughly revised and updated. Seven new chapters have been added for specific clinical coverage of neurologic crises, myocardial infarction, AIDS, and the important problem of post-operative management. Drug-to-drug and drug-to-nutrient interactions are grouped in an appendix by the nature of the interaction (lethal, serious, and minor). The coverage of Clinical Scoring Systems has been expanded. There's also an appendix of Enteral Feeding Formulas which provides specific recipes for the common nutritional packs used in ICU environments. Recommended in the Brandon/Hill list of print books and journals for the small medical library - April 200

Editorial Reviews

Review

University of Minnesota Medical School, 28-JAN-07 -- This is the third edition of an immensely popular overview of critical care practice. Practitioners at all levels will benefit from this work. This edition is another outstanding presentation of applied physiology for the clinician of any discipline practicing critical care. Production quality has been significantly enhanced with improved artwork and paper stock. I believe this edition will be as popular as its predecessors have been. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise, to the point, December 17, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Icu Book (Paperback)
This is a perfect way to obtain a fairly broad fund of ICU knowledge without having to stop every other paragraph to analize and digest the words used to express an idea. I find it very useful for residents and ICU fellows. All physicians in different levels of training will find something interesting in this book. Its size makes it very attractive and its no-frills medical terminology makes it extremely approachable. Tha fact that it has been written by a single author provides a wholesome quality and a unique global view of what the ICU is like. A definite MUST HAVE in anyone's basic ICU library.

4.0 out of 5 stars icu book, November 25, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Icu Book (Paperback)
the book has excellent summaries of pathophys behind what we see/diagnose/measure/do in the icu. the book does have significant drawbacks, though, namely that it is highly biased towards the author's occasionally contraversial opinions. my attendings (all critical care experts) have debated some of his recommendations. also, with the most recent version published in 1997 (and knowing that the acutal revisions were probably done a year or so before that) the book is 5 years behind the times.

in summary, good book for basics, for understanding how and why, for explanations of procedures and basic protocol. be wary of marino's unusual recommendations. be aware of more current recommendations. use other references as well for broader picture.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but First Edition Better, November 8, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Icu Book (Paperback)
Good book for the fundamentals and the physiology behind the patient care. As a critical care MD, I learned alot form the book during my training, however like another reviewer, I found this edition too long. The first edition (much shorter, and the one I learned from and want back) is much better and about half the pages.
