Book Description

September 1, 1996
This tribute to the late Alvin Boyarsky, Chairman of the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London from 1971 to 1990, offers insights into the city by a roster of leading architects from the United States, Australia, and Europe, in the form of visual projects, analytical essays on the urban condition, case studies of individual cities, histories, lectures, reminiscences, and poetry. The contributions by Rem Koolhaas, Bernard Tschumi, and Peter Eisenman, among others, provide an unparalleled range of thinking about the city by some of today's most important writers and practitioners.

The Idea of the City opens with Boyarsky's own study of Chicago, illustrated through the medium of his postcard collection. Themes addressed by other contributors include the role of architecture in our mediated environment, the possibilities for architecture in an age of fragmentation, the defining characteristics of the province and the metropolis, the qualities that contribute to an ideal city, insights into the city gained from the Surrealists, and the relationship between private and public spaces, as well as portfolios of work on urban themes by the likes of Zaha Hadid, Peter Wilson, Raoul Bunschoten, and Peter Salter.

Contents: Chicago à la Carte: The City as Energy System, Alvin Boyarsky. Obsession of Dürer, John Hejduk. Architecture in a Mediated Environment, Peter Eisenman. The Calligraphy of the Plan, Zaha Hadid. Atlanta, Rem Koolhaas. Eurolandschaft, Peter Wilson. Holy Truth in Rough, Daniel Libeskind. Architecture and the Ambiguity of Fragment, Dalibor Vesely.
