Book Description

March 23, 1988
One of this century's most important philosophers here focuses on Plato's PROTAGORAS, PHAEDO, REPUBLIC, and PHILEBUS and on Aristotle's three moral treatises to show the essential continuity of Platonic and Aristotelian reflection on the nature of the good. In so doing Gadamer not only succeeds in giving us an incisive example of his interpretive art but also gives us a clearer picture of the ethical dimension of his own philosophy and the practical implications of hermeneutical theory.

5.0 out of 5 stars Plato AND Aristotle, November 26, 2011

This review is from: The Idea of the Good in Platonic-Aristotelian Philosophy (Paperback)
For those familiar with the writings of Hans-Georg Gadamer, the combination of clarity, earnestness and depth of insight in The Idea of the Good in Platonic-Aristotelian Philosophy will come as no surprise. Gadamer offers a fascinating and compelling re-interpretation of the relationship between Plato and Aristotle, in which he argues compellingly for his controversial thesis of the fundamental unity of these two titanic philosophers. A must read for students of philosophy. Those who are new to hermeneutics, however,--or generally to Continental philosophy following Heidegger--will find this text challenging.
