Book Description

January 12, 2000 0847687937 978-0847687930
In this unique volume, some of today's most eminent political philosophers examine the thought of John Rawls, focusing in particular on his most recent work. These original essays explore diverse issues, including the problem of pluralism, the relationship between constitutive commitment and liberal institutions, just treatment of dissident minorities, the constitutional implications of liberalism, international relations, and the structure of international law. The first comprehensive study of Rawls's recent work, The Idea of Political Liberalism will be indispensable for political philosophers and theorists interested in contemporary political thought.

This is a fine volume, with essays of consistently high quality, an unique in its focus on the 'recent' Rawls of Political Liberalism. (Ethics )

Essential reading for anyone working in contemporary political philosophy. (Metaphilosphy Llc and Blackwell Publishers )

These critical essays by philosophy scholars focus on Rawl's Political Liberalism, which the editors' introduction eloquently distinguishes from Rawl's A Theory of Justice, and provide a chapter-by-chapter overview. (CHOICE )

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading on the Later Rawls, August 28, 2000
By
Robert Talisse (Nashville, TN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Idea of a Political Liberalism: Essays on Rawls (Studies in Social, Political, and Legal Philosophy) (Hardcover)
THE IDEA OF A POLITICAL LIBERALISM contains 14 essays-- many by leading scholars-- critically examining the recent work of John Rawls. This is the first collection of its kind, and is essential reading for anyone interested in Rawls's "political, not metaphysical" interpretation of justice as fairness. Topics include: the distinction between reasonable and unreasonable persons and comprehensive doctrines, public reason and religious commitment, Rawls's idea of an "overlapping consensus," and the implications of political liberalism for constitutional and international law. A must read for any serious student of current political philosophy.

This is a rare oppertunity to read the writing of a future leader of our country. Hershovitz is a Rhodes scholar with a bright future. Buy this book and you can say you knew him before he was famous. Fascinating reading.
