5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun - flexible thinking while learning math!!!
My son got the two player version of Countdown for his birthday when he turned 8 and we quickly found out how wonderful this learning game is! On each turn, the player roles two dice and chooses a function to make a number 1 through 10. For example, if you role a 2 and a 3, you can add them to make 5, multiply them to make 6 or subtract them to make 1. The first person...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Much of a Challenge!
I purchased this item for a first grader who is very interested in anything having to do with math. However, this item does not provide much challenge because of certain limitations. Specifically, the numbers only go to ten (10), therefore you are restricted if you multiply or if you add.

The first person to clear all ten numbers wins the game. To add more interest, when you role 5 and 6 the game lets you either take it as a 1, or you get to knock down all your opponents numbers. Double sixes - major bummer - all your numbers get knocked down and you start over.

After only playing a few times, I found that my son started effortlessly switching gears between all four math functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to make whatever number he needed to clear off his board.

Since then, we have purchased the 4 player version of Countdown as a class gift for his 3rd and 4th grade classrooms - and the teachers love it! Kids learn while having fun - you can't beat that!

This game can be used for younger kids too - just have them use only addition and subtraction. Then add in multiplication and division when they're ready.

I can't say enough wonderful things about this game - you will love it and your children will too!

I purchased this game so that I could help my 7 year old son practice his math. All I can say is WOW! This game makes math so much fun. I played the game with my 7 and 5 year old boys over and over again this afternoon. The games go pretty fast and are so much fun. They didn't want to stop! This will definately be a regular game for us!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Math Game for all ages, November 1, 2006
This review is from: 4 Way Countdown (Toy)
I bought this for my 5 year old son and found that my 4 year old was also very into playing it. This game is very well made and it is easy for them to play on their own. For now, we just add and have recently started subtracting. When we move on we will add the multiplication and division, which is great for this game, you can go at your own pace and it will be fun for many years!
This is definitely worth every cent!

This is a compact, easy to use game. It is not for anyone who already has basic math skills. I bought it to help my eleven year old son improve his and I when I received it I realized it was geared more for first time math students. I ended up giving it to my grandchildren who are 6 and 4. It is more age appropriate for them.

This game is a great way to help increase calculation speed and logical thinking skills while having fun. My whole family (ranging in age from 5-41) enjoys playing together. The rounds of the game are quick, and it's simple to give little ones a bit of help without ruining the fun. One to four players can enjoy the game which involves rolling dice, then either adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing the numbers rolled to produce an answer that will permit you to "flip" one of the numbered tiles. The first to flip all 9 tiles wins. The wooden construction is much more appealing than the usual plastic. The flip numbers are reasonably durable and should last as long as children are supervised while playing. Overall an excellent learning game, lots of fun and well constructed for the price. I would buy again as well as give as a gift.

This toy is great especially for younger children and children with ADHD. We have a little girl (10 yrs) in our group and she is behind the others and she enjoyed the game more than anybody. There are not a lot of little pieces which I LOVE and if you do lose anything, it's the dice and you can always purchase more dice anywhere. I really like the portability.

The object of this game is to be the first to flip up all of your numbers by adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing.

I bought this because it looked like a fun way to learn math facts. My children are in 1st and 3rd grade. Even though my 1st grader is learning addition and subtraction, we use manipulatives so that she can learn multiplication and division as well.

If you roll a 2 and a 4, she can easily count the dots on each dice to find that 2+4=6. Then we shake it up a bit by laying out 4 groups of 2 items. She can then visually see that when you add two items four times, the answer is 8 or, that 2x4=8. We will do it again except make 4 groups of 2 items. We count them and she finds that 4 two times is 8 or 4x2=8. Then we will do division and see how many sets of 2 it will take to get the number 4. she realizes that 4 divided by 2 equals 2.

The time goes by so quickly. It is nothing to sit and play this game for 30 minutes or so because the kids really enjoy it. If you ever roll a nine, you get to choose a player that has to flip all of their numbers down and start over so yes, this game can take quite some time.

My kids bring it to their friends house and they all sit around the board and play. It only allowes 4 at a time but usually as many kids that are around are usually sitting in the background thinking and helping find a number you can use to win the game. Even the adults are captivated. We all sit around and watch the kids. It's funny because I never would have thought a math game could be so much fun.

We play the Spelldown game as well. They are both equally fun!

I use Countdown in my remedial math classes to help reinforce basic math facts. The kids love to play. We have even changed the rules to suit the needs we have. One of my students loves the game so much, she had me order one for her. When my students walk in and beg to play Countdown, I know I have a winner. They have no idea how much thinking and math they're doing. It's a great game for all ages.
