3.0 out of 5 stars Some good tips, but overpriced, January 1, 2007
This review is from: The Ideal Classroom Setting for the Selectively Mute Child (Paperback)
This particular booklet has some good tips and was the most useful of the 4 I purchased by this author. Still, for the price I would recommend investing in Maggie Johnson's The Selective Mutism Resource Manual instead. It is also pricey, but worth every penny.

I also highly recommend Helping Your Child With Selective Mutism: Steps to Overcome a Fear of Speaking which is very useful and reasonably priced.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do not hold my child back just because she won't talk., May 12, 2004

I received a call from my Kindergartners teacher saying they wanted to hold her back because they could not assess her because she would not talk in class. I asked them to send me the assessments and my daughter did perfectly. I had to fight to make people understand that my daughter is bright and not willfully being defiant. She has an Communication anxiety disorder that most likely is genetic. I went to my DR. with information I received from the [...] site and got an assessment from my Doctor. I then took this assessment to my childs school and was able to put a 504 plan in place. I also requested that they order this book, and the others written by Elisa Shipon-Blum and hope they will work on understanding this disorder.

In my search to find the answers to why my middle child acted so differently than my other children, and not receiving any answers, I began my own quest. I read books that explained temperments and it helped me understand my daughter. All of the books such as, "Raising your Spirited Child", "The Dificult Child", "The Strong Willed Child", "The Explosive Child" all had the same quality/traits that my daughter was exhibiting. However, it did not address her not speaking in certain situations. I believe all these books can be tied in with Selective Mutism / Communication Anxiety and other Childhood Anxieties. I don't know why my daughter has all these other symptoms such as low sensory, low frustration levels, etc., but after reading the forums at [...] I have found that most of these children with SM have the same characteristics. Many have been misdiagnosed with ODD & Autism, among other things.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!, September 20, 2008
This review is from: The Ideal Classroom Setting for the Selectively Mute Child (Paperback)
If you are choosing a book on Selective Mutism for the first time, you probably don't know very many people who are familiar with this anxiety disorder. As a parent of an S.M. child I can relate to that. I am recommending a book (this book) for the first time because these books are costly and it's important to choose wisely. Upon receiving this book, I sat done and read it in one sitting. I then donated this book to our school teacher. She read it before the school year began. This book has been a wonderful asset to both of us. It explains everything you need to know about your child at school, it is easy to read and understand, and it gives provides detailed information on what to do. It also has a FAQ area in the back of the book. I highly recommend it!
