5.0 out of 5 stars Do not hold my child back just because she won't talk.
I received a call from my Kindergartners teacher saying they wanted to hold her back because they could not assess her because she would not talk in class. I asked them to send me the assessments and my daughter did perfectly. I had to fight to make people understand that my daughter is bright and not willfully being defiant. She has an Communication anxiety disorder...

I also highly recommend Helping Your Child With Selective Mutism: Steps to Overcome a Fear of Speaking which is very useful and reasonably priced.

I received a call from my Kindergartners teacher saying they wanted to hold her back because they could not assess her because she would not talk in class. I asked them to send me the assessments and my daughter did perfectly. I had to fight to make people understand that my daughter is bright and not willfully being defiant. She has an Communication anxiety disorder that most likely is genetic. I went to my DR. with information I received from the [...] site and got an assessment from my Doctor. I then took this assessment to my childs school and was able to put a 504 plan in place. I also requested that they order this book, and the others written by Elisa Shipon-Blum and hope they will work on understanding this disorder.

In my search to find the answers to why my middle child acted so differently than my other children, and not receiving any answers, I began my own quest. I read books that explained temperments and it helped me understand my daughter. All of the books such as, "Raising your Spirited Child", "The Dificult Child", "The Strong Willed Child", "The Explosive Child" all had the same quality/traits that my daughter was exhibiting. However, it did not address her not speaking in certain situations. I believe all these books can be tied in with Selective Mutism / Communication Anxiety and other Childhood Anxieties. I don't know why my daughter has all these other symptoms such as low sensory, low frustration levels, etc., but after reading the forums at [...] I have found that most of these children with SM have the same characteristics. Many have been misdiagnosed with ODD & Autism, among other things.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!, September 20, 2008
This review is from: The Ideal Classroom Setting for the Selectively Mute Child (Paperback)
If you are choosing a book on Selective Mutism for the first time, you probably don't know very many people who are familiar with this anxiety disorder. As a parent of an S.M. child I can relate to that. I am recommending a book (this book) for the first time because these books are costly and it's important to choose wisely. Upon receiving this book, I sat done and read it in one sitting. I then donated this book to our school teacher. She read it before the school year began. This book has been a wonderful asset to both of us. It explains everything you need to know about your child at school, it is easy to read and understand, and it gives provides detailed information on what to do. It also has a FAQ area in the back of the book. I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Explanation, December 16, 2005
This review is from: The Ideal Classroom Setting for the Selectively Mute Child (Paperback)
This book is excellent in defining what a 'Selectively Mute Child' is and goes through. Because of this book, I understand what my child is feeling when he becomes anxious. I not only learned that my child is 'Selectively Mute', but I also learned that I have been all of my life when I thought I was just 'painfully shy.' A reviewer made the comment that this book was overpriced. Maybe when they wrote the review they forgot that there is no set price on what parents pay to help the children that need us. Besides, part of the proceeds goes to a foundation called "Speak Out for Our Children."

I am a special education teacher and I have searched high and low for a book that would be beneficial for me, my student, and the parents. After reading this book, I realized that this book is a necessity for anyone who comes in contact with a selective mute child/person/student/relative... ECT... I have gained many techniques and information from this book. Prior to this book, could not find any decent books relating to the selective mute except this one. Not only is this book "decent" it should be mandatory! If you do not purchased this book you will be missing out valuable information that the doctors don't even know!

As a parent of twins with Selective Mutism, I loan this book to the teacher every year to introduce SM. This book presents SM in a manner easy to understand and offers suggestions to ease anxiety. It has helped my children over come issues because the teacher understands what is going on.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as much info as I thought, June 27, 2011

The interventions given were pretty fundamental. I thought it would offer much more than it did. I could have searched the net and found most, if not all, the interventions given. Nice place to start for a parent who doesn't want to spend alot of time researching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much needed information for teachers on Selective Mutism, June 18, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Ideal Classroom Setting for the Selectively Mute Child (Paperback)
This gives a lot of good ideas to a teacher about how to help the selectively mute child.
The classroom is the major setting where selective mutism occurs and its there where the safeness and security must be felt by the selectively mute child if they are to progres-not the therapist's office.
Teacher's need the support and information to help these children.
I am a school psychologist in the elementary schoolss and we are seeing more and more children with SM
I am also reseraching SM in my doctoral program.

4.0 out of 5 stars Selective Mutism: Help for the teacher, July 29, 2008
This review is from: The Ideal Classroom Setting for the Selectively Mute Child (Paperback)
I found the book to be very helpful in understanding selective mutism and it offered good suggestions for the teacher. It was a little pricey for such a small book and at times it was repetitive. It did however, offer enough practical insight and suggestions that made it a good purchase.
