I bought this door about 2 to 2 1/2 years ago. It was rather expensive from a local home improvement store which had to special order it due to size. (I got the super large size). I have 2 large 130lbs+ dogs. was able to install this door myself. I am NOT handy, at all. The installation was super easy, thought the fit was not very good at all. In order to help fix this I have purchased some sticky foam type stuff. (I can't remember exactly what it is called/made for) and ran it from top to bottom where the sliding door panel now met the stationary patio panel. I then got a piece of wood and wedged it in the track of the door against the sliding door to force the sliding door against the pet panel insert. This door is no longer usable by humans as the opening (gap between the sliding door and patio door) is like 8 inches. Thankfully there is a patio door in the bedroom that also leads to the back porch and only takes like 8 steps to get to. There is a definite draft more noticeable in the winter and our very hot summers. I figure the difference I pay in electricity would be the same to pay a pet sitter to let the dogs in and out while we are at work. Plus it allows me to sleep in and not feel bad if someone has to go potty. It was rather easy to teach the dogs to go through it and I have "special" dogs. One in particular had a tough start in life and is scared of the yard (but not the porch) and still learned to go through it in a day. I've been unable to teach him to sit in the 2 years he has been here, so it really is one the simplest things to teach them. It might have been helpful that the door was large enough for me to crawl through so I'm sure the "demonstration" helped them. I did not even bother installing the locking feature.Read more ›

Product arrived very quickly! Easy to assemble. Glad I ordered this version that comes in two pieces since it will be much easier to remove if/when I ever move. The only hassle was the height. Even though it has a spring loaded top panel to accommodate height adjustment, my sliding glass door must be a little shorter than normal. I could install it in the sliding screen track, but I wanted it on the door track to make it more weather tight and solid. So, I cut off 3/4 inch of the lips on the top adjustment piece to make it fit snug. Since it is aluminum it cut very easily on my table saw with carbide blade. I would suggest that the manufacturer consider shortening the upper panel by one inch so that such an adjustment would not be necessary. As others have indicated you also need to pack some foam insulation between the two sliding glass doors to make them weather tight. I used the type that is used around window air conditioners. In order to "lock" the sliding portion of the door, I cut a piece of white PVC pipe and placed it in the bottom track of the door to wedge it tight against the pet door. When I want to go outside, I simply remove the piece of plastic pipe. Same technique that many motels use on their sliding doors to guest rooms. Having said all the above, the cat uses it constantly. I would purchase it again and recommend it to pet owners, especially if you are handy with a table saw!

This is our third sliding glass dog door. When you consider how often the door is used, the weather conditions, etc this door works great. Our doors have averaged 5-6 years each. We have 2-3 dogs at any given time so they get alot of use! We have had to replace parts of the door about every other year however considering the convenience that this door offers both ourselves and our dogs this door is worth every penny. With time you will have to replace the plastic door section however this can be done rather inexpensively. You can't go wrong with this product which is why the 5 stars.

Purchased this because I ended up in a situation where I was unable to let my dog out during lunch and wanted to give him the freedom to go inside and out as he pleased, but without doing any damage to a home I do not own (I am renting)

This product works as advertised but there are a lot of catches, the weather stripping that comes within the box is absolute garbage and you're better off getting your own lining as you will need a large amount (at least I did) to ensure an airtight seal. I'd also recommend running some thermal tape along the outline once it's popped in the frame, as even with the stripping around it you will never have a perfect, airtight seal.

The biggest flaw in this product I believe is both the lack of durability in the dog door, and the fact that the dog door isn't upgradeable with parts supplied by Ideal Pet. I have, however found an amazing solution to the problem I was having with the dog door that comes with this (Was beginning to warp after 6 months, and the magnets are extremely weak so anytime it was remotely windy the door would blow inside along with the cold air)

I purchased the Extra-Large version of this despite the fact that my dog is a medium sized breed. I was able to find out, although it was a gamble, that the Perfect Pet All-Weather Efficient Medium sized dog door fit PERFECTLY within the existing frame of this (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001GIDJNK/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

The only modifications you need to do are simple, and do not remove the orig. functionality should you choose to revert back to the stock dog door. All you need to do is remove the frame, and drill two pilot holes for the screws after you pop off the magnetic strip on the bottom of the door. The frame fits snugly and looks as if it came with the frame. I added a picture to show what it looks like if you would like to see!.
