I am pretty sure that we will be able to find something at the hardware store that will work better.

This product consists of six plastic panels (four sides, top and bottom) with snap off extensions on each edge and four long 1/4" bolts. The instructions are limited and not too helpful. To install the product, you determine the thickness of the wall, snap off one or both extensions, push the six parts together to form a tunnel, cut the bolts to length, insert the tunnel between the inside and outside dog doors and try to get the bolts to start in the threaded inserts in the outside door, which can be difficult if the inside and outside doors are not perfectly aligned or if the inside and outside walls are not perfectly parallel. If the openings are not exactly opposite each other, the tunnel ends up slightly askew, creating gaps and interfering with the operation of the flaps of the dog doors. The instructions suggest filling the gaps with silicone caulk. Try that upside down 2" off the floor. Make sure you have your bifocals adjusted perfectly.

The bolt have heads like a carriage bolt, but with a Phillips drive. They are made of very soft metal and the heads are slightly larger than those included with the dog door, making a tight fit and making it difficult to remove them when repeated attempts are necessary to line up the doors. I stripped Phillips drive in the soft metal. The local hardware store didn't have this type of bolt, so I ended up buying coupling nuts and threaded rod to extend the length of the short bolts included with the dog door.

I believe I would have had an easier install if I had framed an opening and installed the dog doors on each side without this kit. I would have had to find the long bolts or modify the outside door to use a screw.

This is a great kit for wall installation. But be aware that although it mentions usable for walls using 2x6" studs if your home is recently built it has foam sheathing for added insulation. Mine has the extra wall insulation resulting in the kit "tunnel" not being deep enough to seal, leaving a gap which I had to frame in.

The pet door came next day but the wall kit came 5days after, I hired a handyman to install it since I didn't have the right tools. He took little over 2hours to install them a little longer than I had expected. The door look very neat and my dog didn't take too long to learn to use the door. My dog feels free to go in and out whenever she wants to and I am glad that I don't have to wake up at 4 or 5 AM. I was worried about the hot air coming through the gaps but double flaps work pretty good at blocking the airflow. Overall, the product exceeded my expectation.

I love the doggy door - to me it is the best one on the market. 5 stars to the door, 1 star for the wall kit. The wall kit is required for wall installation but could be improved upon. It should include some snap on tubes to help line up the screws since you cannot see what you are doing. Aligning two holes with a 6 inch gap between them where you cannot see the receptacle for the screw is the worst part of the installation. Also, the liner should be hinged. I initially thought it would be between the doggy door and the studs but it sits on the inside of the doggy door. So you put in this liner, then put in the inside part of the door, lifting the liner to sit inside and then try to do the same after putting on the outside part of the door. Then you try to line up the screws. If it were hinged and could be inserted AFTER putting up the actual doors, installation would be much easier. It gets in the way and is frustrating when you are already struggling with trying to get the screws to catch without being able to see what you are doing. I would have rather bought the long screws from the hardware store and found something else to hide the gap.

Amazon showed this wall kit to match with the extra large dog door, but it didn't fit the dog door. The side pieces matched up perfectly but the top and bottom were too short to fit. Because of this, we were unable to install the door in the wall and instead had to install it in an exterior door without the kit. By the way, the dog door itself was perfect.

I had screwed up the first wall kit that I had ordered by clipping off one side of the inner wall tube. This made it just a bit too short to cover the interior effectively. Was having problems with the dogs going through the door too fast and knocking it lose exposing the interior of the walls. So finally re-ordered another set and installed it like I should have done to begin with. Now it's perfect.

I replaced an existing pet door that had broken with an Ideal Pet Door. The ideal pet door is a much better unit than the other leading brand but this Weather Wall Kit is another matter.

First, this kit is not easy to install. It's not impossible to install but it does have some inherent design weaknesses. First, the Ideal Pet Door is designed in such a way that the installer has to connect the inside door unit to the outside door unit with a fairly long bolt that is inserted form the inside unit and then threads into four holes in the outside unit. If your installation is such that the less lengthy hardware included with the pet door is sufficient then the installation is MUCH easier.

Our door is mounted through the rear wall of the house and the distance between the inside unit and the outside unit is such that the Weather Wall Kit was required. The kit itself is nothing more than a fairly flimsy plastic tunnel that goes through the wall opening. It has "snap off" areas so that you can snap off any excess length that this tunnel might have. That worked fairly well BUT the tunnel is so flimsy that it barely supports either of my pooches each of who weighs just under 60 lbs. I think that in reality the tunnel is more cosmetic than functional.

Second, Ideal provides the four VERY long screws that are long enough for the tunnel to be installed at its fullest length. The instructions call for you to cut the threaded end to length according to your installation. Each screw fits through the inside unit of the pet door and then connects with a threaded socket on the rear of the outside unit. OK, cutting the threaded part of each screw can be a major disaster if your not used to shortening bolts and so forth when needed. Here is a hint.
